Jammu, March 17: While the coalition government of National Conference and the Congress is yet to make a difference and deliver on the promises for a range of reasons, much of its performance in the coming future depends on what Jammu and Kashmir gets in its Annual Plan discussions for which are underway with the Planning Commission in New Delhi.
Formal discussions between officials of the Planning Commission and the officials of Jammu and Kashmir government began this morning and the final meeting is slated for the afternoon of Wednesday. Annual Plan size is likely to be finalized tomorrow.

Jammu, March 17: Two days after Government found itself in a spot when Army refused to be a part of the probe into the Bomai killings, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today rushed in with fire fighting measures to bring Army on the board.

Jammu, Mar 17: the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked Defence Ministry to pay Rs. 3 lakh as compensation to the family of a youth, killed in a fake encounter.
The Commission had taken suo motu cognisance of the killing nearly six years ago on the basis of a media report published on June 8, 2003. Earlier, the Defence Ministry had failed to give its reply in connection with the killing.
In the incident, personnel of 119 Battalion of Assam Regiment were accused of killing of a Kashmiri youth, Javed Ahmed Magrey in a fake encounter, a charge which was later corroborated by a magistrate's inquiry and police probes as well.

Srinagar, Mar 17 : Above normal minimum and maximum temperatures in the Kashmir Valley has been a cause of concern as snow on the higher reaches had started melting, while people in Kargil and Drass continued to shiver with minimum temperature dipping to minus 10 and minus 14 degrees Celsius this morning.
Official sources said above normal temperature during this period of the season has resulted in early melting of snow on the upper reaches. The maximum temperature was about six degrees above normal, while the minimum was one degree above normal this morning, which was a great cause of concern.

New Delhi, March 17: The rift within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified on Tuesday, with senior leader Arun Jaitley skipping a second meet of the party’s Central Election Committee.
Reports said party vice president Venkaiah Naidu failed to convince Jaitley to attend the meeting. Jaitely is unhappy with party president Rajnath Singh over the appointment of businessman Sudhanshu Mittal as BJP's co-convenor of Northeast region.

| | | | Saffron Gandhi booked for communal remarks | | | | New Delhi/Pilibhit, March 17: Acting swiftly on the Election Commission’s directions, the district magistrate of Pilibhit in UP on Tuesday filed an FIR against BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate Varun Gandhi over his alleged communal remarks.
The action comes after the Election Commission directed Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Election Officer to file a case against Varun and issue notice to his party for the communal remarks against a particular religion.

Jammu, Mar 17: Deputy Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council Arvinder Micky today administered the oath of office to six newly-elected members of the House.
New MLCs -- Ajatshatru Singh, Khalid Najeeb Suharwardy and Vijay Bakaya (all National Conference), B R Kundal (Congress), Syed Asgar Ali (PDP) and Syed Mohmmad Qafiq (JKNPP) -- were administered the oath of office by the deputy chairman in his office chamber here this morning, officials said.

Ghulam Hassan Bhatt of Sopore had reached airport to take a flight for Srinagar when airport security-men found wad of money in his bag.
