Jammu, Apr 20: Notwithstanding the 'hollow' assertions of thecoalition Government on holding of UrbanLocal Bodies Polls as early as possible, these appear to be a distant dream fornow. Despite preparedness on front ofsummary revision of electoral rolls having been put on fast track, conductingof elections is unlikely , at least for few months, thanks to the 'strategic understanding' of both partners ingetting these delayed on one or the other pretext.
Sources said while ruling National Conference has not yetmade its cards clear about its willingness nor on preparedness for ULB polls,its alliance partner Congress is not interested this political exercise to beconducted very soon. Jammu, Apr 20: Despite the oft-repeated Government assurances that it was committed to devolve powers upon the elected panchs and sarpanchs, they continue to be "powerless". Their role in the State's development process is yet not defined by the Government.
According to a senior block officer, panchayat members have been interfering in their almost every work, saying it is part of their duty. "This can lead to a problem, or even a clash if the officials refuse to cooperate with them," he said.
