Inflation soared to a 42-month high of 7.57 per cent for the week ended April 19 on account of higher prices of vegetables, food articles, steel and some fuel items.
The wholesale price-based inflation rose 0.24 percentage points from 7.33 per cent in the previous week despite concerted efforts by the government and the Reserve Bank to check price rise.
However, Finance Minister P Chidambaram exuded confidence that inflation would be tamed and he appealed to the people to have faith in the government and keep patience.

Following recovery of Election Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) from Pakistan origin slain militants in north Kashmir, the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party are about lock themselves against each other in fresh controversy.

Army today proposed a substantial hike ranging from 100 to 200 per cent in the newly created military service pay (MSP) for personnel below officer rank (PBOR) and its extension to the higher ranks.
Army has also asked for correcting aberration in grade pays in the middle officers ranks and restoring their status and parity with other government services.
These proposals were finalised for submission to the Ministry of Defence in the biannual Army Commanders conference which took note of the concerns and dissatisfaction among the ranks over the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission.
