| Water crisis: Have-nots stare at dry taps | | PHE control rooms to monitor water supply on papers; authorities blind to plight of people | | | MISHU GUPTA
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 3: People residing in the old city area woke up today only to find their taps dry, with no supply of water in almost all localities. Long wait interspersed with requests to the concerned authorities through pho-nes proved a futile exercise. Working folks went to offices without even washing their faces while others at home literally remained glued to taps, desperately waiting for a drop of water.
The relief only cam e when the supply was restored around 3.00 pm , around seven hours late than routine timing.
The scene is neither unprecedented nor unusual particularly during hot summers. It however, is surely contrary to the claims of the government made recently that it was seriously contemplating to formulate a new water policy for maintaining and streamlining the available natural water resources of the state. In the backdrop of sufferings of people due to irregular and curtailed supply, the recent statements by the Minister for PHE Taj Mohiud-din also sounds hollow that government is fully committed to provide drinking water facili...

JAMMU, June 3: Looking for an easy entry into the echelons of power in the civil secretariat? Must 'eye' the posts of PROs with Ministers and 'grab' the opportunity as and when it comes , no matter the salaries are less. For the post, even though for a period that lasts the term of the government or the innings of the concerned minister, is loaded with privileges and cozy comforts which not even a permanent officer enjoys throughout the service career.
Public Relations Officers, fondly called PROs in the modern political and administrative parlance are most "privileged and pampered " lot in the hierarchy of officers and officials our ministers have the privilege of k...
| | | | PM won't hold talks with separatists: Omar | | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
SRINAGAR, June 3: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Thursday ruled out the possibility of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh holding direct talks with the pro-freedom leadership during his forthcoming Kashmir visit.
"I think the PM is coming to Kashmir to attend a SKAUST convention and not to initiate talks with the separatists. The PM won't be involved in the initial state," Omar told reporters here on the sidelines of an official function.

| | | | Jazia on Amarnath pilgrims:Is J&K a secular polity? | | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 3: All this shows that Kashmiri leaders, both "mainstream" and separatists, Kashmiri "civil Society", Kashmiri media, Kashmiri lawyers and advocates, Kashmir-based "human rights" activists, in fact, everyone in the Valley contributed to the growth of sectarianism and joined hands to oppose the decision of the State Government to divert a piece of land to the Shrine Board. Their actions, including attacks on the Amarnath Yatris, all established that they stood for a non-secular polity.
Mercifully, a number of non-Kashmiri "human rights" activists, social scientists, opinion-makers, writers and journalists also made common cause with those in Kashmir who vehem...
| | | | Contrasting political, social order causing alienation among two regions | | | | ARTEEV SHARMA
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 3: Be it a human rights breach, fake and custodial killing, rape or even a small speck of turbulence arising from the valley, the resounding resistance to it from social and political dispensations there is so awesome that it has its collateral boom on the global scenario even.
Vice versa is the case here in Jammu that remains in deep slumber on a holocaust even that has made it suffer on all accounts.
In Kashmir, the surging public rage backed by the strong leadership on any mishap or misadventure takes the government to ride not only in the state but extends a shocker to New Delhi also that compels to rise to such echoes.
The Shopian case ... | |
| | | | J&K symbol of secular India and, hence, non-negotiable | | | | RUSTAM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 3: A close scrutiny of these books and articles, which were published during all these years of turmoil in Kashmir, however, reveals that all those who penned down their views, for the most part, refused to look beyond the Kashmir Valley on the misguided notion that the Valley of Kashmir constitutes the entire State of Jammu and Kashmir and that winning the "hearts and minds of the alienated Kashmiri Muslims" would be the same as meeting the needs and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Ladakh and all those who have never been considered part and parcel of the so-called Kashmiriyat. A study of these writings also tells that all or nearly all the au...
