TOP STORY OF THE DAY
Amnesty to stone pelters alone won't guarantee peace
8/31/2011 11:59:29 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 31: Angry youth clashed with the security forces in Sopore, Anantnag and Srinagar immediately after the Eid prayers ended at these places. The clashes though subdued, had a subliminal message for the State Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah. Omar Abdullah had announced one-time amnesty for the arrested stone pelters and also confirmed that cases filed at various police stations against them would be withdrawn. The Chief Minister had shown goodwill towards the youth who from time to time had disturbed peace in the Valley during the last two years. It is not material to discuss whether the youth had the backing of the separatists or Omar's adversaries in the mainstream political camp. What is material to the ground situation in the Valley is the fact that the youth after they have been released as a goodwill gesture do not again indulge in the same anti-social practices as they had been doing prior to their arrest by the police. The incidents of violence in Sopore, Anantnag and Srinagar city today carry a serious message for the Chief Minister and the coal...

8/31/2011 11:59:08 PM
Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 31: At least two persons, including a woman, were injured as clashes between protestors and police erupted in some parts of the Kashmir Valley after Eid prayers today. The law enforcing agencies used batons and tear gas shells to chase away the demonstrators who were protesting against the recent spate of arrests in the old city, they said. Two persons, a policeman and a woman, were injured in the clashes, they said. Protests also erupted in volatile north Kash...

3 women picked up by City PS as burglary suspects, "tortured"
8/31/2011 11:58:58 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 31: Three poor women were picked up by City police station as suspects in a theft case and allegedly tortured in lock up. A police document said Asha Rani (30), wife of Rocky, Sunita Devi (35), wife of Vijay Kumar, and Nisha Rani (18), daughter of Champa, all residents of Rajiv Nagar, Narwal, were detained by City PS two days or so back as suspects in a theft case. The police station confirmed the detention but said all the women were later released without the registration of any case against them. The women, who were later admitted to the GMC hospital for the treatment of injuries they allegedly received at the police station, alleged in their statement t...

Omar’s tweet triggers controversy, attracts scathing criticism
8/31/2011 11:57:41 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 31: What he thought was a reasonably justified tweet has landed State Chief Minister in the centre of another controversy. The BJP on Wednesday termed as 'unfortunate' and 'shocking', Omar Abdullah's tweet on Tamil Nadu assembly passing a resolution pleading for clemency to Rajiv Gandhi's killers. Omar Abdullah kick started a controversy when he tweeted about the Tamil Nadu assembly passing a resolution pleading that the death sentence given to three killers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi be commuted. "If J&K assembly had passed a resolution similar to the Tamil Nadu one for Afzal Guru would the reaction have been as muted? I think not," he tweeted on...

Bouquets to surrendered militants, brickbats to Amaranth land row martyrs
8/31/2011 11:55:30 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 31: The State Government has framed a policy for the rehabilitation of surrendered militants or the forces that waged a war against the unity and integrity of the nation but it has no policy for rehabilitation of the families of 13 martyrs of Amarnath land row agitation of 2008. This speaks volumes of the double standards adopted by both Union as well as state government towards the nationalist forces in J&K. Three years have elapsed since the land row agitation ended and agreement was signed between the leaders of Shri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) and State Government on August 31, 2008 and at that time it was agreed in principle to provide a job t...

Amnesty for stone peters, backtracking on commitment for 2008 Jammu cases?
BJP questions Congress, PP silence, NC intentions
8/31/2011 11:54:17 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 31: Three days after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced general amnesty to the youth of Kashmir who were arrested last year on charges of stone pelting, BJP today questioned his intentions and also alleged the move was reflective of discrimination with Jammu youth who continue to face cases related with 2008 Amarnath land agitation. BJP has also tried to corner rival Congress over the issue for what it alleges their silence towards Jammu oriented issues despite being coalition partner in the ruling dispensation. Raking up the discrimination card once again BJP has lashed out at the Chief Minister for applying two yardsticks in one state- one in Kashmir an...

Kashmir Settlement: Duggar Pradesh also has a say
Volcano Of Discontent
8/31/2011 11:52:43 PM
Neha JAMMU, Aug 31: The explosive situation in the Valley should focus attention on the miserable plight of the two other regions of Duggar Pradesh (Jammu) and Ladakh, which have been groaning under the Kashmiri yoke for decades. While Duggar Pradesh has been sitting on a volcano of discontent, convinced that only separate statehood can end its neglect, the Ladakhis have been clamouring for Union Territory status for the trans-Himalayan Ladakh to overcome the threat to the identity of its people. In other words, Duggar Pradesh and Ladakh are keen on entering mainstream politics by snapping their political links with the Valley. Their misgivings have been deepened by New Delhi's moves to n...

Secessionist and communal violence in Kashmir
Human Rights Champions
8/31/2011 11:52:09 PM
Rustam JAMMU, Aug 31: India is passing through critical times as far as its sovereignty and territorial integrity is concerned. This grave situation is the handiwork of certain external and internal forces actively working against the unity and integrity of India. One can understand the ulterior motive of Pakistan and the Kashmiri secessionists behind the upsurge in Kashmir. But one fails to understand the real motive of the so-called human rights associations like the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), the Citizens for Democracy (CFD), the Radical Humanist Association (RHA), the Manav Ekta Abhiyan (MEA) and similar other associations and their leaders. The reports they produced f...
