NEW DELHI, DEC 27 – President Pratibha Patil has, indeed, accepted today the resignation of Andhra Pradesh Governor Narain Datt Tiwari in the wake of outrage following a TV sting operation exposing worst kind of lust, though grounds of failing health have been cited by the Governor for stepping down.
Sadly unlike this, similar cases involving the higher ups in public life elsewhere in the country, or outside the confines of Andhra Pradesh, may not necessarily meet a similar end.
And in case a punishment comes at all this may take as long as 19 years and may turn out to be as mild as six months in jail as has been the case with the former DGP of Haryana SPS Rathore for molesting a poor girl and a tennis player called Ruchika Grihotra who later committed suicide.
What is even more appalling is that punishment in such cases is what is mostly talked about without bringing in focus to the abysmal low that public life and its practitioners or public servants may have hit.

SRINAGAR, Dec 27: Nearly two dozen persons, including six photojournalists and head of a Police Station, today sustained injuries in ding dong clashes between stone pelting groups and Police when an unidentified person lobbed a fire container (Kangri) on a Moharram procession at Maisuma in the capital city. Scores of Tazia and Alam processions were taken out today on occasion of 9th of Moharram in Shia-dominated localities all over Kashmir valley where the month’s largest event, Ashoora, is being celebrated with solemnity on Monday to remember Prophet Mohammad’s grandson, Hazrat Imam Hussain, and 71 of his companions martyred at Karbala in Iraq over 1400 years ago.

JAMMU, Dec 27: Inspector Sultan Mirza, lodged in Kot-Bhalwal jail along with SSP Manohar Singh for their alleged role in the fudging of weapon of offence in Amandeep Murder Case, was today given two days permission by the court to attend the funeral of his younger brother.
Sultan's younger brother --Zameel Mirza -- died at his District Police Lines (DPL) Quarter No 33-D all of a sudden Saturday night. He was preparing for KAS exams. As their parents live in their ancestral house at Neti in Rajouri, Zameel's body was taken by the family members to Neti this morning.

JAMMU, Dec 27:
In the first such incident of its kind in the area, a 60-year-old woman and her daughter-in-law were murdered by a youth in the forests of Doda district after they resisted his alleged moves to outrage their modesty.
The double-murder, which sparked off strong protest in the area, took place in Kothi Puneja forests of Thathri in Bhaderwah tehsil of Doda this afternoon.
Police sources said Gomti Devi (60) and Reeta Devi (25), both residents of remote Kothi Puneja village in Thathri, left home for the forests in the morning to collect wirefood.
