An Indian soldier was killed in firing from Pakistan across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Krishna Ghati sector of Jammu and Kashmir Monday morning, army sources said. The second incident of its kind within a week came on the eve of foreign secretary and foreign minister level India-Pakistan talks in Islamabad. The gun fire in Krishna Ghati of Poonch district, about 200 km north of Jammu, started around 7.15 a.m., killing Naik Jayasewar of the Gorkha Rifles in the initial burst. The LoC is the effective border between India and Pakistan across much of Jammu and Kashmir.Officially, the Indian Army was neither confirming nor denying the incident.

Governor Lt. General (Retd ) S K Sinha today assured that apprehensions about damage to environment due to Amarnath yatra were uncalled for, saying that all necessary precautions are being taken to preserve the fragile ecology of the area.

It could happen only in Jammu and Kashmir. A woman constable, declared dead two years ago, has been found alive in a migrant camp on the outskirts of Jammu — living with her Hindu paramour. Nelofar, a constable with the Jammu and Kashmir police, was reported missing March 2006 by her family which alleged that she had disappeared — and, in all probability, had been killed by the police for she “knew some secrets about her superiors”.
According to police records, Nelofar was sent to Badami Bagh cantonment in Srinagar for frisking duty from where she went missing.

Keen to take the peace process with Pakistan forward, India is expected to press for launch of more cross-LoC bus services and early operationalisation of the truck service when the two sides resume the composite dialogue in Islamabad tomorrow.
The Indian side is also expected to propose increasing the frequency of fortnightly Srinagar-Muzaffarabad and Poonch-Rawalakot bus services to make these weekly, official sources said.
