Bashir Assad SRINAGAR, May 8: Apparently disturbed over prolonged suspension of work on Uri-II Hydroelectric Power Project, Union Power Ministry today summoned Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Taj Mohiudin and Minister of State for Power, Shabir Ahmad Khan to New Delhi and impressed upon them to facilitate resumption of work on the prestigious project. It merits a mention here that work on project was suspended after protest demonstrations against National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) constructing Uri-II power project had broken in Uri for non-implementation of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between State Government and Government of India guaranteeing employment of locals in the project during which a class 12th student was killed in the firing of Central Industrial Forces. The situation took ugly turn when protesters forced NHPC to suspend work on the project on January 2, 2012 since then the work has not been resumed till date which has become a cause of concern for Power Ministry which fears cast escalation to a great extent. Even as the Chief Minister approved the proposal to raise the em...

First RTI, now Evidence Act, JKB says no to both
5/9/2012 12:35:46 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, May 8: The latest 'resistance' to transparency and free flow of information by the J&K Bank Ltd has been its denial to furnish evidence documents to the State Vigilance Organization (VOK) which had to obtain a court direction asking the bank to furnish the evidence documents required by the VOK. Its earlier refusal to furnish information under the RTI Act has now been followed by the bank's refusal to even furnish evidence documents to the investigating officers. It is highly disturbing to note that the State's premier banking institution should act in a manner like this. The RTI act is a public benefit act and it is mandatory for public interest institutions, i...

Khoda may get extension of 6 months as DGP
5/9/2012 12:35:34 AM
Ahmed Ali Fayyaz SRINAGAR, May 8: Reaching superannuation after completion of 38 years in Indian Police Service (IPS) at the end of current months, Director General of Police (DGP), Kuldeep Khoda, is likely to continue in his chair by the end of November 2012. Highly placed bureaucratic sources in New Delhi disclosed to Early Times that Omar Abdullah's government in Jammu and Kashmir was "strongly" in favour of granting extension of six months to the service of incumbent DGP, Mr Kuldeep Khoda. According to these usually reliable sources, J&K Government was seeking extension to DGP's service with the argument that change of guard in the state of "fragile peace" would be highly imprudent at...

Show cause notice against Gani

"We must join hands with the pro-Indian politicians to find a solution to the vexed problem", he said. Mirwaiz convened an emergency meeting at the Hurriyat headquarters today. Amid chaos, Umar said the conglomerate would not compromise on its constitution. The Hurriyat constitution stresses for a solutio...

CM's latest on deferment: tourism season is on…..!
Dragging on Local Bodies Polls
5/9/2012 12:34:59 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, May 8: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah proposes any move for the state only to be disposed off by him alone, albeit after some time under one or the pretext . There are always reasons galore to put off things on which his government first shows keenness and 'good intensions' and later comes out with excuses that may suit them politically but are unpalatable and unconvincing for masses in general and opposition in particular. The latest on delaying Local Bodies Polls by none other than the Chief Minister is the ongoing tourism season which is forcing his government to defer elections for some time, even as it was he who almost pronounced the month, everything sho...

Addressing 'internal dimension of Kashmir issue'
Inter-Regional Bitterness
5/9/2012 12:33:42 AM
Neha JAMMU, May 8: Addressing reporters yesterday on the occasion of re-opening of move offices in Srinagar, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah once again asked New Delhi to address the "internal and external dimensions of Kashmir issue", opining such an action on the part of the Union Government has become imperative in order to forge a lasting peace in Jammu and Kashmir and the region as a whole. He didn't say the issue of Jammu and Kashmir; he said the Kashmir issue. Quite understandable. After all, he, like all the Kashmiri leaders, takes people of Jammu province for granted overlooking the fact that they constitute one of the three most important factors in the political situation in the st...
