Impending danger leads to silent migration, water level still rising
Baghliar Dam begins showing colours - II Doda region residents alarmed
7/11/2011 12:49:26 AM
Who is lying? In complete contrast to claims of Jammu and Kashmir government, water level of river Chenab has been rising at an alarming level. As can be seen in the picture 1, water level is just 15 feet away from submerging the only bridge connecting Doda with rest of the world. Pic 2 shows submerged Temple and Mosque of what was once known as Pul-Doda. Early Times Photo/Syed Junaid Hashmi Syed Junaid Hashmi DODA, July 10: Impending fear of submergence of areas lying along Batote-Kishtwar national highway (NH) -1B has forced a large chunk of population to migrate to areas considered as safe zones in erstwhile district Doda. Clueless administration does not accept this and term the silent migration as "need based rehabilitation." However, survey carried out by Early Times has reveale...

This political drama or to put it plaInly the `exploitation of 1931 martyrs' has been going on unabated for the past eight decades. The commoner on the street has a question in mind. Has autocracy really ended? On July 19 last year, some quarters talked about change of guard in National Conference...

RTC Agenda: 11 Questions for interlocutors
7/11/2011 12:37:17 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, July 10: Interlocutors for J&K have prepared an agenda for the round table conference, to be held in Jammu on Monday and Tuesday in which around 40-50 selected persons would take part. The agenda is available with the selected persons. Even a cursory glance at the agenda would force any reader to ask some direct questions to the interlocutors in order to clear doubts in his/her mind about their real intensions. Questions: 1. Do they consider J&K an integral part of India to the same extent as other states of the Union? 2. Do they consider J&K a disputed territory whose political future has yet to be decided? 3. Why have they not included in their agenda the de...

Issue of empowerment -- I
7/11/2011 12:36:50 AM
Rustam EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 10: The Trans-Himalayan Ladakh region's premier political organization, Ladakh Union Territory Front (LUTF), has been consistently reiterating its demand for Union Territory status for the cold-desert which remains cut off from rest of the world for several months a year. LUTF organizes massive public rallies at regular intervals to press its demand. Reflecting on their demand, the LUTF leaders say that though they "welcome the ongoing initiative of the Union Government for resolution of the Kashmir problem", the people of Ladakh, who have suffered immensely due to "at least three wars between India and Pakistan", will not allow their strategic regi...

An overwhelming majority in Jammu wants separation from Kashmir
Wrong Assessment
7/11/2011 12:36:11 AM
Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 10: Chief Interlocutors Dileep Padgaonkar yesterday once again asserted that no one in the state wants trifurcation of the state. His assessment is wrong. The fact of the matter is that an overwhelming majority of people of Jammu province, like the people of Ladakh, want the state to be reorganized on a regional basis so that each region becomes a master of its own fate. They may not be using the term trifurcation, but they are consistently demanding reorganization of the state. Reorganization of the state would mean trifurcation and nothing else. Those who say that the people of Jammu are not for the state's reorganization are blissfully ignorant of...
