AGENCIES NEW DELHI, Sept 23: On Board PM's Special Aircraft, Sept 23: On the eve of his maiden meeting with Pakistan's new President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said Islamabad must address the rising issue of cross border terrorism. Asked what message he would convey to the new Pakistani President Zardari during his first meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York tomorrow, Singh said it would not be proper for him to say anything before the commencement of the talks. Singh, however, said India and Pakistan faced "enormous challenges." "We have to convert these challenges into opportunities and see how peace can be brought and how we can work together," he said. Singh referred to rising cross-border terrorism which has to be addressed by Pakistan. "We welcome the advent of democracy in Pakistan. We are looking forward to working with them and how we can work together," he said. He denied to be drawn into a discussion on the role of Pakistan's ISI in the bombing of the Indian Embassy in the Afghan capital Kabul saying he ...

9/23/2008 11:51:37 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 23: Unable to meet its Eid deadline for rolling down trucks on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road, the government is working on some good news for Kashmir Valley –various leaders arrested under the Public Safety Act during the current separatist agitation are being released. Prominent among those held under the PSA are Democratic Freedom Party leader Shabir Ahmed Shah, Coordination Committee spokesman Mussarat Aalam, Dukhtraan-e-Millat leader Aasiya Andrabi and her husband. An indication in this connection was given by the Governor NN Vohra who, while chairing a high level meeting in Srinagar, said that PSA cases are being reviewed. The meeting also understood th...

EC firms up opinion, to take call after Eid

HAMAAD SALIF JAMMU, Sept 23: Keen to avoid adverse “political advertisement” at international level, the Center government is considering the prospects of holding timely assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir even though all political parties save BJP have put their foot down. Political sources said that though the state unit of Congress too is not in favour of holding elections in November-December but the Congress led United Progressive Alliance Government is not in any mood to delay the polls. “Holding elections in time with lower percentage is not being considered as bad as delaying them for six months”, pointed out a source who had a specific input from New Delhi. It is reliabl...

At 10, this aspiring Cardiologist kid is one among 3 lakh dancers
9/23/2008 11:50:35 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 23: A wrist injury while performance may have lessened his prospects of shaking the Boogie Woogie floor, but master Adhaar Kaul –a little son of Jammu –is not less than any wonder kid. By any means, Adhaar is one of 42 best dancers of his age selected out of more than three lakh contestants for India’s top dance competition on small screen. Adhaar, 10, created history of sorts when he reached in the semi-finals of “Boogie Woogie international dance show on Sony TV, hosted by the legends Javed Jaffrey, Naveed Jaffrey and Ravi Behl. He got all kind of praises from the judges. “I was selected in Boogie Woogie international dance show through an audition whi...

EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 23: One person in Jammu and Kashmir expecting timely assembly elections, rather early polls, and keen to have the democratically elected government as soon as possible is perhaps none other than the Governor NN Vohra who has been made to walk over the thorny fields ever since he took over at the Raj Bhawan. Governor’s usually enjoy a luxurius, leisurely and peaceful life at the magnificent Raj Bhawans. But this was not the case for Vohra who inherited a bitter legacy from his predecessor and more worst from the PDP-Congress coalition government. Taking over the reigns of Jammu and Kashmir at a time when state was in flames, Vohra had been keenly waiting ...

Guns not laws can tackle terrorism
9/23/2008 11:14:13 PM
Nirbhay Jammual Following escalation in the level of militancy related violence in various states in India the demand for stringent laws for tackling terrorism continues to soar.Do we need tough laws to deal with terrorists ?The question is debatable. It has already divided the political spectrum in the country. The Congress led UPA Government seems to be a confused lot, though the level of confusion and conflict has receded after the success of Delhi police in nabbing all those who were involved in the recent serial blasts in Delhi and Ahmedabad. The UPA Government seems to have been placed in a well of confusion following the allegations levelled against it by the BJP and its allies for ha...

All not well on LoC
9/23/2008 11:13:41 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Sept 23: Notwithstanding the fast measures to have better relations on both sides of divide, all is not going well along the Line of Control. Two points on the Line of Control are being readied up for trade and enhanced people-to-people contacts, but there dozens more points where militants stationed on the other side are making desperate attempts to sneak in and disturb peace. The latest encounter in Poonch sector is a case in point where Army killed four infiltrators but the Pakistan counterparts refused to take charge in the flag meeting. Washing its hands off abetment to infiltration by providing fire cover, the Pakistan Army is instead accusing the Indian...
