SRINAGAR, Jan 10: Even as the State Finance Commission Chairman, Mehmood-ur-Rehman, has completed his second post-retirement assignment in Jammu & Kashmir and his first ever report is now understood to be in the final stage, recommendations of a search committee previously headed by the former IAS officer are gathering dust in the Civil Secretariat for the last 16 months. Paradoxically, the beneficiary of Omar Abdullah government’s indecisiveness over the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor for Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) is none other than a man for whom the PDP patriarch Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was bent upon subverting the law even after his exit from the top office.

Jammu: Troops along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir have been put on high alert after reports of an increase in infiltration attempts into the state.
"There are intelligence reports of further increase in the cross-border infiltration attempts from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Troops have been put on high alert along the Indo-Pak border and have intensified round-the-clock patrolling," security officials said.
According to intelligence received, 1,000 to 1,200 militants are staged along the border in launching pads to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir from POK, they said.

Srinagar, Jan 10: Leh in Jammu and Kashmir was the coldest as the minimum temperature dipped to settle at -21.4 degrees Celsius.
Kargil recorded a minimum of -17.0 degrees Celsius and Srinagar -4.6 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, Met Office said.
The further drop in the night temperature in the city resulted in freezing of the banks of major water bodies, including Dal and Nigeen lakes.
However, the winter sun provided the much needed relief to the denizens.

Two top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants, including a deputy divisional commander of the outfit, were today killed by security forces in a fierce gunbattle at Thanol, 70 km from Reasi towards Mahore.
