| J&K misses bus, polls announced for 5 states | | | | AGENCIES
NEW DELHI, Oct 14: The Election Commission on Tuesday announced assembly poll schedule for five states including BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh in what is seen as "mini general elections" ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, but remained undecided on Jammu and Kashmir.
Chhattisgarh will have two-phased polls on November 14 and 20, while Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will have one-day polls on November 25 and December four respectively. Congress ruled Delhi and Mizoram will have elections on November 29. Counting of votes will take place in all the states on December eight.
Announcing the schedule, Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami said the three-member Commission was still assessing the situation in the troubled border of Jammu and Kashmir and no decision has been taken "at the moment".

JAMMU, Oct 14: Amidst a mix of contradictory expectations in state, the Election Commission has just stopped short of saying that assembly elections are deferred in Jammu and Kashmir as it announced schedule for five other states.
The Commission, in its press conference in New Delhi today, though indicated that a decision about Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly may be announced later but it refused to say anything further.

JAMMU, Oct 14: With the increase in infiltration bids along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, army troops have foiled fourth such attempt in five days and shot dead a Pakistani militant in a gunbattle in Poonch district and forced others to flee back.
Giving details of the infiltration bid, a senior army official said a group of militants entered the Indian territory from across the LoC in the Kanchi post forward area of Mendhar sub-sector of the district late last night.
