CM’s big first shot in Assembly, gets opposition wrong on facts Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 27: Leaving little for the Opposition Peoples Democratic Party to defend on a charge thrown in the legislative assembly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today claimed with no confidence that no damage has been done to the civilian property in Banidpore during and encounter between security forces and militants on January 29. Peoples Democratic Party legislator from Bandipore Nizamuddin Bhat had challenged the Chief Minister on his information of loss that occurred in Bandipore. The MLA had said that the Chief Minister was fed with wrong information. Assuring the legislator that facts will be brought before the House, the Chief Minister this morning deputed Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar along with local MLA Nizamuddin Bhat and Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda to Bandipore to ascertain the facts. Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 27: Life in Srinagar remained crippled today as authorities imposed stringent restrictions on the movement of people in old city and a shutdown was observed in uptown areas against alleged "atrocities" by security forces. Hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in the areas falling under 15 police stations of the city to prevent separatists from staging rallies after Friday prayers. Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 27: Criticising the National Conference (NC) led coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir for failing to release detenues, the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) today said more than 1,500 separatists are languishing in different jails in and outside the state for years. A spokesman for the HC Aiyaz Akbar said despite assurance by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah before and after the Assembly elections that detenues would be released, nothing has been done so far. Economy grows at 5.3% in Q3

New Delhi, Feb 27: Impacted by the global economic meltdown, the Indian economy has clocked its slowest quarterly growth in over five years, at 5.3 per cent, in October-December period of this fiscal. Despite a stimulus package, growth in the economy was brought down by a fall in growth in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors. Against the whopping 8.9 per cent growth in the same period a year ago, economists said it is now the Reserve Bank's turn to provide stimulus to the economy by cutting rates, as inflation is already down to 3.36 per cent.
