| No Need to Panic, Food Prices Will Come Down: PM | | | |

NEW DELHI, Mar 5: Asserting that food stocks are comfortable, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said the government will take all "practical" measures to insulate people from rising prices of essential commodities.
"I will be the last one to deny that the behaviour of food prices in the last one year is some thing which does not worry us," Singh said while replying to the debate on Motion of Thanks to the President's Address in the Lok Sabha.
The government, he said, has taken all possible measures to check the rising prices of essential commodities and it would adopt all "practical methods" to provide further relief to the people.
Singh, however, asserted that there should be "no panic on the food situation front" in view of comfortable level of food stocks that are available with the central government.
Rabi crop (winter) prospects are also very encouraging. Post-monsoon rains have been good. All this augurs well for food prices to stabilise at a reasonable level, he added.

JAMMU, Mar 05: Apprehending trouble, police today took into preventive custody at least 12 contractors, who had come to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) head office at Rail Head Complex here for submitting tenders for the transportation of goods.
As the FCI carriage contract is highly profitable, several
contractors, including some from Srinagar also, had come with their
supporters to submit tenders in the FCI office.
At present, the FCI carriage contract was with a firm jointly run by a NC MLC and Choudhary Nagar alias Nago, who was in the jail in connection with the fudging of evidence in the infamous Amandeep

The personal security officer (PSO) of ex-CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Khalil was today killed, while his driver sustained critical injuries when their Maruti Gypsy skidded off the road and fell into a gorge at
Manthal near Tikri, about 30 km from here on the Jammu-Srinagar road.
