New Delhi, May 29: India will focus on developing new vaccines to fight new diseases surfacing worldwide, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said soon after taking charge Friday.
'India is a big developing country and why should we depend on western countries for vaccines? Why should we take technology from them? We have to take a proactive initiative to make new vaccines to fight new diseases resurfacing in the past few years like swine flu, bird flu, dengue and many others,' Azad told reporters after assuming office at the ministry at Nirman Bhawan.

New Delhi, May 29: With no one in the 79-member council of ministers entrusted with the culture ministry, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be holding the portfolio, PMO officials said here Friday.
While Kumari Selja has been given the tourism ministry, the culture ministry was not allocated to anyone.
The PM will hold the culture ministry, said a prime ministerial aide.
Selja, who is also heading the housing and urban poverty alleviation ministry, will be taking charge of the tourism ministry Saturday.
PMO officials said it was felt that Kumari Selja has to work in two big ministries and so was not given the culture ministry.

Srinagar, May 29: The snow clearance operation on traditional Pahalgam and shortest Baltal routes to holy Amarnath cave in south Kashmir Himalyas was going on war footing even as the administration is gears up its machinery for the annual pilgrimage from June 15.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), to be deployed at the cave shrine and other halting stations enroute, were still camping at Baltal.
''We will march towards the cave shrine as soon as we receive green signal from the authorities,'' CRPF spokesman P Thripathi said.
He said all the CRPF personnel were at Baltal, where a base camp had already been established.
