TOP STORY OF THE DAY
J Consumed 14017.244 MUs & K 17234.051
Jammu paid Rs 1651.91 crore as power tariff & Kashmir only 1061.95 crore
6/5/2012 12:43:45 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 4: People across Jammu province are seething with anger. There are many reasons which have added to their anger. One of the reasons is the erratic or no power supply and at a time when the day temperature ranges between 42 and 46 degree and the minimum temperature ranges between 24 and 30 degree. The truth is that the people of Jammu province have been facing worst ever power crisis in the midst of unbearable scorching summer. People of this province have never faced such a power crisis with the sweltering heat adversely impacting their economic and social activities and keeping majority of them awake in the night. Students are also the worst sufferers. The power crisis has also culminated in yet another crisis: erratic or no water supply. The situation has worsened to the extent that people do not get power for hours together. There are scheduled cuts and there are unscheduled cuts even in the metered localities. This is the position in the state's winter capital, Jammu. The situation is even worse in its outskirts as well as rural areas. Jammu prov...

Deodar, pine trees cut at Jaigathi but forest deptt do not have any such report
6/5/2012 12:43:33 AM
BHARAT BHUSHAN JAMMU, June 4: In the lush-green Jaigathi forests of the mountain-locked Bhaderwah, several deodar and pine trees have been felled ruthlessly. While the officials concerned vehemently denied reports of the cutting of green gold, terming them as "baseless" and the handiwork of those who wanted to tarnish the image of the department, photographs, which Early Times has, say something else. These photographs were taken in compartment No 32 of Jaigathi by the "lensman" who last week walked through the valleys and into the thickly-wooded hills to expose a possbile nexus between timber smugglers and officials, risking his own life. In the photographs, some men are seen felling gr...

Omar defies his own logic with short-circuted truth
6/5/2012 12:40:51 AM
early times report Jammu, June 4: Chief minister Omar Abdullah questioning the logic of protests in Jammu against curtailment of Amarnath Yatra said the truth is inconvenient. It's indeed inconvenient if looked in proper perspective and not through the prism of your convenience. Even a cursory look at the past figures would suggest that yatra has increased when the duration has been increased, From 2005 till 2009 the duration has been 60-day and it increased from 3,88,000 (2005) to 5,33,368(2009). The fact remains that the weather condition was not different at that time. And going by the logic of the Board and CM, that weather condition is not favourable, the figures clearly show tha...

Omar again talks about Amarnath, says God stopping pilgrims
'Comment likely to lit fire'
6/5/2012 12:40:43 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, June 4: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has seemingly lit the fire once again by unnecessarily commenting on the annual Amarnath Yatra. On the micro-blogging site Twitter, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has referred to Amarnath pilgrims and said that it is not the state government which is stopping the pilgrims but god. "Actually, right now God is stopping you because there is so much snow on the route that it is not possible to move on the route," he wrote. The comment has come at a time when hundreds of Amarnath pilgrims have reached Jammu and are eager to move towards the cave shrine. Administration in Jammu is facing tough time in controlling the increasing num...

BJP fails to agitate 'impressively' over curtailment of Amarnath Yatra duration issue
State unit in disarray
6/5/2012 12:40:16 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, June 4: Despite issue of curtailment of annual Amarnath pilgrimage snowballing into a major controversy, BJP state unit has failed to agitate the issue the way they did in the year 2008. Organisational abilities have gone down drastically and the party has failed to become part of the protest demonstrations in the way they did it in the year 2008. They have lost the connection which they had managed to establish with the commoners in Jammu. The party's state unit has few faces brave enough to face the public. The MLC voting fiasco has vertically divided the unit and just because NC does not want to hold assembly elections, BJP's dissidents are having a field day...

Four decades later, debate refuses to die
Land to The Tiller V/S  Roshni
6/5/2012 12:39:57 AM
Abodh Sharma Jammu, June 4: Even as many illegal occupants have been regularized as the owners of thousands of kanals of state land under hyped Roshni Act, more than four decades later, those who lost their land under Land to the Tiller Act are still questioning Government's intent in bringing about two contradictory legislations which changed the fortunes of many forever. While under the Roshni Act, those who had illegally occupied government land were made legal owners, under the Land to The Tiller Act, the legitimate owners of their ancestral land were robbed of their properties. Interestingly, both Roshni Act and the Land to the Tiller Act were brought by governments of the National...

Political elite transforms education into business, runs private institutions directly, indirectly
6/5/2012 12:39:44 AM
Bashir Assad Srinagar, June 4: The Jammu and Kashmir government owes a solemn responsibility to the populace to put the rotten education system on track by taking effective administrative and financial measures, however, for all practical purposes it has failed to deliver to put the education system on track. On one hand the government has failed to put the government schools back on rails which continue to present a gloomy picture of the entire system and the inefficiency rather insensitivity of the government in improving the infrastructure in these schools to impart quality education to all. The malaise in the government schools has set in so deeply that it will require drastic mea...

BJP has different stands on different regions
Against Jammu
6/5/2012 12:39:08 AM
NEHA JAMMU, June 4: The Congress party, like the National Conference and other Kashmiri parties, is also known for its bias against the people of Jammu Pradesh, notwithstanding the fact that they constitute its core constituency in the state. It is essentially Kashmir-centric and it will ever remain so. The people of Jammu province are aware of this fact. In fact, they are angry with the Congress leadership. But they are also not happy with the BJP. There are valid reasons for them to criticize the BJP and also dub it as anti-Jammu organization. The accusation of the people of Jammu that the BJP has, like the Congress, also let down them cannot be dismissed as something preposterous. The...
