On J&K troop reduction, Gen Singh clarifies he talked about army | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
NEW DELHI, Jan 15: A day after his utterances on troop reduction in Jammu and Kashmir, army chief, Gen VK Singh today clarified that while he spoke about army personnel, home secretary GK Pillai referred to para-military forces.
His comments were largely seen countering Pillai, who Friday said there would be 25 per cent troop reduction in the state. "I think there was some confusion. "No person from home ministry will say about army as it is under the purview of the defence ministry. I am quite sure that home secretary knows about it and talks only about para-military forces, Singh said.
Hours after Pillai's statement, he had said, "We have not yet felt that we have to cut down our forces. If they want to cut down para-military and police forces, I won't say anything." The army chief today noted that any decisions regarding reduction of troop strength in the valley would be...

Jammu, Jan 15: The Chief Minister today said with authority that the separatists would come to the negotiating table. Political circles have termed Chief Minister's optimism as wishful thinking.
A similar statement was made last year at a time when the Valley was up in flames. That time it had been stated that `influential persons' were out to woo the separatists. However, nothing moved. But then the situation was different. Even the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz refused to talk to a delegation from India. The angry youth even torched the effigy of Hizbul Mujahideen Chief, Syed Salah-d-Din when he issued a statement on the last year's agit...

| | Troops Reduction Home Ministry says yes, Defence Ministry says no | | | RUSTAM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 15: The UPA Government is in complete disarray. There is no coordination between the crucial ministries dealing with the country's internal and external security. The situation has turned so bad that the Home Ministry and the Defence Ministry are taking diametrically opposite stands on presence of the Army in the terrorist-infested troubled Jammu and Kashmir in general and the Kashmir Valley in particular. Even more alarming perhaps is the fact that the Home Ministry has virtually intruded in the domain of Defence Ministry, thus making the confusion worse confounded and sending a wrong signal. It's no wonder then that the Chief of the Army Staff, Gener...
