| Ban temporary, says Center | | | |
New Delhi, Nov 9: With Jammu and Kashmir Government expressing its displeasure over banning of pre-paid mobile phones, Centre today said the move was temporary and the operations would be restored once the safety mechanism was in place.
Home Ministry officials said the Government understands the problem being faced by the 38 lakh pre-paid SIM card holders in the State but it cannot undermine the security risk involved with the process and hence the decision to impose the ban.
"We know that 92 per cent of all SIM cards used in Jammu and Kashmir are pre-paid. We are not for a blanket ban on pre-paid connections in the State for all times to come".

Srinagar, Nov 9: The 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway was closed this morning due to heavy snowfall while the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu highway was still open despite rains.
A traffic police spokesman said that the Srinagar-Leh highway was closed due to heavy snowfall at Zojila and other places.
He said no vehicle was allowed from Drass or Srinagar today.
The highway was scheduled to get closed for six winter months officially from October 31. However, it was decided to allow traffic on the highway till weather permits.

Jammu, Nov 9 : A 30-year-old woman pilgrim died of cardiac failure in a hotel at Vaishno Devi base camp Katra in mountainous Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police sources said here today.
“Matneesha Devi, 30, wife of Updesh, resident of Bhanpur, district Lalipur, Uttar Pradesh died of heart attack in a hotel room last night,’’ police sources told .
She was immediately shifted to the hospital but declared brought dead. The deceased had come to Katra along with her family members to pay obeisance at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi cave shrine.

Srinagar, Nov 9 : Noted Kashmiri singer Ghulam Hassan Sofi passed away here early this morning.
He was above 75.
He breathed his last in hospital early this morning and will be laid to rest at Malkah graveyard later in the day.
Sofi, also known as ''Mohammad Rafi'' of Kashmir, remained associated with Radio Kashmir and Songs and Drama division for more than four decades.
He was awarded Sher-e-Kashmir award for his contribution to music, particularly Kashmiri, in the state.

New Delhi, Nov 9: Cabinet ministers in the first term of the UPA government have spent more than Rs 300 crore on their foreign and domestic travels in the last three years.
The data provided by the Cabinet Secretariat shows more than Rs 137 crore were spent by ministers of cabinet rank on the foreign travels between fiscal 2006-07 and 2008-09 with highest in the year 2007-08 when more than Rs 115 crore were spent by them on such travels.
Surprisingly, the expenses incurred on the domestic travels of cabinet ministers during the period were more than the amount spent on their visits abroad.
