Flash floods leave four dead, several injured
Rains wreak havoc across J&K
2/8/2011 12:13:45 AM
sumit sharma EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 7: Torrential rains, gusty winds and snowfall on Monday wreaked havoc leaving four dead including a BSF porter and causing injuries to several persons including three security forces personnel in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir regions. Rain, which started on Sunday evening, triggered avalanches in several parts of the state and resulted in shooting stones on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, leading to its closure for traffic. "An avalanche struck at a forward post at Kabul Gali, Gurez on the Gurez-Mushkoo-Drass side. A porter died and four others, including three BSF men, were injured," said an official. An Air Force plane failed to make a sortie to the spot to airlift injured. "But the injured are being treated at Kabul Gali only. They could not be airlifted due to adverse weather," said the official. Victim of the avalanche has been identified as Jamal Lone, a resident of Gujran, Gurez. A day after the warning issued by Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Cell regarding medium-danger avalanche due to incessant rains, three ...

Time of confession for armed forces, guerrilla groups in J&K
2/8/2011 12:13:09 AM
ahmed ali fayyaz SRINAGAR, Feb 7: 'I-am-the-good-you-are-the-evil' has been the hardline of all actors of violence in the Kashmir conflict. Consequence is inescapably the casualty of truth. Players of all hues, without exception, have indulged in causing harassment to opponents, kidnapping, murder, enforced disappearance and displacement. Kashmir is a small place and, in most of the incidents, it does not take years to learn who has done what. Public perception has erred in very few cases. What a slain separatist leader's son has been saying and withdrawing for years and what the senior Hurriyat leader, Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, has revealed at a conference here in the beginning of last mo...

Fingerprints can prove to be best evidence in Udhampur double murder
2/8/2011 12:11:33 AM
bharat bhushan EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 7: Fingerprints, which are the best evidence in any police investigation to place an accused at a crime scene, are so far the only vital clue that police seem to have got in the February 2 sensational Udhampur double murder. MES employees -- Moti Ram and Bodh Raj -- were found murdered with their throats slit inside the "highly-guarded" military cantonment area of northern command in the wee hours of February 3 morning. The macabre incident had come as a surprise for police, especially because it occured inside the army cantonment where the entry and movement of outsiders was strictly prohibited. "We have collected fingerprints and these ca...

Lashkar admits: We did it
Killing of Teenage girls
2/8/2011 12:10:59 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Feb 7: Lashkar-e-Taiba, which initially denied its involvement in the killing of two teenage sisters in Sopore town of Baramulla district last week, has claimed the responsibility now. Posters appeared in the Sopore town, 52 kilometers from here, claiming that Lashkar militants killed Arifa and Akhtar, alleging the duo of working as "informers" for the security forces. Laskhar-e-Taiba killed the girls because not only was their behavior improper but they were also involved in a heinous crime of being informers," the posters read. However, the veracity of the posters could not be ascertained. The message was written on the letter head of "Mujahedeen Lashkar-e...

Kupwara killing: Why did not Magray stop when asked by the Army?
Army apology intriguing
2/8/2011 12:09:59 AM
NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 7: The extra ordinary sensitivity and concern shown by the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir to the reported killing of 'an innocent youth' in North Kashmir can be only appreciated at the first look of the incident. Immediate intervention of the CM saved the situation from escalating; demonstrated the commitment of the present government in the state to the policy of "zero level tolerance of human rights violation by the security forces" operating in the hostile environment of the state in general and Kashmir Valley in particular; and gave a decisive signal to National Conference party structures in Handwara about the high value its leadership atta...

2/8/2011 12:09:06 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Feb 7: The Assembly Secretariat today came out with its provisional calendar of forthcoming Budget session to be held in the winter capital of the state. The calendar is not in line with the system the Assembly Secretariat had envisaged earlier of keeping a break of around a month on the pattern of Parliament. However, towards the end, the provisional calendar suggests a gap of nearly 6 holidays after which the Legislature will meet again for week's time. The session commencing on February 28 will have Budget presentation on March 7 and will conclude on April 9. Last month the Assembly Secretariat had mooted this proposal to the government of holding session ...

RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 7: Pakistan again in 1999 made a concerted attempt to annex Jammu and Kashmir. It attacked Kargil to achieve its sinister goal. As expected, the Indian Army again inflicted a crushing defeat on the Pakistani intruders but in the process sacrificed hundreds of precious lives. The Indian soldiers once again demonstrated their remarkable commitment to the national cause and made the Pakistani Army to bite dust. This was Pakistan's fourth successive humiliating defeat and India's yet another spectacular victory that made India really proud. It would not be out of place to mention here that it was the most difficult battle the Indian Army had fought in year...
