AHMED ALI FAYAAZ SRINAGAR, Mar 23: Army’s four days long operation in the snow-clad a dense forest cover of Shamswari, closed to LoC in Kupwara district has discovered pre-spring infiltration of atleast 25 heavily armed militants of Lashkar-e-Toiba through Karnah and Keran ridges of Machhil sector in Kashmir valley. With the death of five more militants and 3 more soldiers, today as many as 19 militant and army personnel have died in the last 100 hours of the fear gun battle. Spokesman at headquarter of Srinagar based 15 Corps - Lt. Col. J.S. Brar, told Early Times that troops eliminated 5 more militants today in the fierce gunbattle at two different places in the sprawling Shamswari jungles. According to him 11 militants had got killed in the operation unprecedented in the last over two years. He revealed that four more soldiers also got killed in today’s exchange of gun fire with the militants. With this 11 militants and eight soldier have died in the gun battle. AGENCIES New Delhi | Mar 23: BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley has said that the Election Commission (EC) had no right to advice to debar Varun Gandhi from contesting the Lok Sabha elections and suggested that it should instead stop candidates with a criminal background from entering the fray. "The power to advice as to who should be the party's candidate and who should not be the candidate does not rest with the Election Commission," Jaitley told reporters. EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu: A teenage boy from New Delhi died while returning from the shrine of Vaishnodevi in Katra area of Jammu Region on Monday. Reports reaching PBI said that Rinku, 14, hailing from New Delhi died when he was returning from Vaishnodevi shrine, where he had gone to pay obeisance along with his family. AGENCIES NEW DELHI: Expressing concern over reported disappearance of people in Kashmir, the United Nations on Monday proposed India to have independent investigations into it and wanted New Delhi to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). "India can invite special rapporteurs for independent investigations," UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay told reporters. President Pratibha Patil issued the notification for the first phase covering 124 seats spread over 17 States and Union Territories.
