New Delhi | Mar 23: BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley has said that the Election Commission (EC) had no right to advice to debar Varun Gandhi from contesting the Lok Sabha elections and suggested that it should instead stop candidates with a criminal background from entering the fray.
"The power to advice as to who should be the party's candidate and who should not be the candidate does not rest with the Election Commission," Jaitley told reporters.
The BJP leader said "debarment and disqualification of candidates is strictly covered under Article 102 of the Constitution. The ultimate effect of which is upon conviction in an offence for three years and more.

Jammu: A teenage boy from New Delhi died while returning from the shrine of Vaishnodevi in Katra area of Jammu Region on Monday.
Reports reaching PBI said that Rinku, 14, hailing from New Delhi died when he was returning from Vaishnodevi shrine, where he had gone to pay obeisance along with his family. Police sources told PBI that Rinku was rushed to the hospital for treatment, where the doctors declared him brought dead.

NEW DELHI: Expressing concern over reported disappearance of people in Kashmir, the United Nations on Monday proposed India to have independent
investigations into it and wanted New Delhi to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
"India can invite special rapporteurs for independent investigations," UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay told reporters. She said India could invite international observers during elections in Kashmir.

NEW DELHI : The notification kickstarting the formal process for the five-phased Lok Sabha elections beginning on April 16 was issued today.
President Pratibha Patil issued the notification for the first phase covering 124 seats spread over 17 States and Union Territories.
Notifications were also issued by respective Governors for 154 of the 294 assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh and 70 of the 147 assembly seats in Orissa, going to polls along with the Lok Sabha elections in the first phase.
