Fourth Estate aghast over Omar's comments
3/26/2012 11:30:53 AM
Special Report Salil Raina: The Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah launched yet another attack on the media during the launch of an English newspaper recently. He urged the media not to rush to conclusions without ascertaining the facts. The journalistic fraternity has taken a serious note of the Chief Minister's utterances. They perceive it as yet another attempt to strangulate the press. Incidentally this is not the first time when the Chief Minister has attacked the media. Besides three privilege motions against three senior journalists during previous year's budget session, the arm twisting in the shape of denying advertisements to various newspapers have won the incumbent government a `warning' from none other than the Press Council of India chairman. He has directed the government to behave properly with the journalists. The media men have made clear that a government accused of governance and trust deficit by New Delhi cannot teach ethics to the scribes. "Media knows how to perform as it has to respect, cultivate and defend the right to information of all people. Media resea...

Administrative chaos reaches peak, Pest Controller to look after Women Commission
J&K goes 'Natha' way!
3/26/2012 1:03:54 AM
Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Mar 12: Administrative chaos seems to have reached its zenith with state government seemingly rehabilitating a retiring liver fluke-cum-reindeer pest controller by posting him as secretary of Jammu and Kashmir state commission for women. Dr. Khursheed Ahmed Zargar, who is likely to retire in the next few days, has been posted as Secretary in the state women commission on deputation basis for a period of two years with a rider that he would retain lien and promotion prospects in the Animal Husbandry department. If sources in the civil secretariat are to be believed, the seemingly rehabilitation order has been issued on the directions of Chief Minster's office. Th...

Govt lacks will to sanction prosecution against 31 tainted IAS, KAS officers
3/26/2012 1:03:07 AM
early times report JAMMU, Mar 25: In general opinion, it is more shameful for a government to be overcome by the forces of bribery. But, in J&K, which has been labelled as the second most corrupt state in the country, the corrupt are "protected" in the corridors of power without any regret. This becomes evident from the fact that the successive state governments lacked will to take action against the 31 tained IAS and KAS officers who were found involved in scams and misappropriation of funds. A massive Rs 300 cr scam was unearthed in JAKFED. Its probe was entrusted to senior IAS officer K B Pillai, who in 1999 submitted a voluminous report to the then chief minister Farooq Abdullah...

3/26/2012 1:02:36 AM
early times report Jammu, Mar 25: CPM general secretary Parkash Karat, who had raised a pitch against corruption, is strangely not aware of the JJKCA cricketing scam , in which the name of former CM and union home minister has figured in. Two officer bearers of the Association were sacked in the scam which is alleged to be of Rs 50-cr. Parkash Karat had arrived in Jammu on two-day visit to attend 9th State level congress of the party. "I haven't gone through and wouldn't be able to comment on it," said Karat when asked to comment about the scam. The comments of the one the tallest leaders of the CPM, which though has lost steam to Mamta Banerjee, appear strange as the reports...

Irked over pace of development
3/26/2012 1:02:09 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 25 : When former Chief Minister and Union Health Minister visited his home town (Bhaderwah) today, he was accorded a rousing reception. The sleepy town came to life as people irrespective of age and gender, the people came out to apprise him of their woes. A calm and composed Azad listened patiently and expressed displeasure over slow pace of developmental works in Bhaderwah constituency. Azad was shocked to see projects started by him during his tenure as Chief Minister still incomplete.
