SRINAGAR, Apr 23: Kashmir valley today observed near-total shutdown to register its protest against a Delhi court's pronouncement of the capital punishment on three convicts, including two Kashmiris, who have been held guilty of causing a bomb blast at a crowded market in Lajpat Nagar Market near 14 years ago. Thirteen persons had died and 38 others had sustained injuries in the car blast that happened on May 21 in 1996.
After holding six of the accused guilty and acquitting remaining four persons of all the charges on April 8th, District & Sessions Judge S P Garg had pronounced death sentence on two Kashmiris, namely Mirza Nisar Hussain of Shamswari and Mohammad Ali Bhat of Hassanabad, and Mohammad Naushad of Turkman Gate Delhi on April 22nd. Court had also convicted Javed Ahmed Khan of Naupora to rigorous life imprisonment. NEW DELHI, Apr 23: The Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure has given its nod to a project to promote use of renewable energy by harnessing natural resources in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 473 crore. This would entirely be met by the Centre.

Earlier it was felt that only one or two pa pers were leaked, but after the arrest of BOSE strong room incharge Mohan Singh Jamwal yesterday, police came to know that all the papers of the two classes had been leaked and sold in the market. This has put a question mark on the BOSE credibility. While some students burnt the midnight oil to score good marks, a vast majority of others had an easy access to the question papers in advance, making the entire examination process a useless exercise.

Jammu, Apr 23: The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Srinagar today remanded BSF commandant and constable accused of killing a youth on February 5 to judicial remand for 12 days. The BSF petition for transfer of the case to BSF court was strongly contested by the public prosecutor. He told the court that a civil case could not be transferred to a BSF court.

JAMMU, Apr 23: Two alleged cheats, who had taken by fraud Rs 1.5 lakh from an unemployed youth on the pretext of providing him a job in railways, were today arrested by police from Nawabad area.
Police sources said Balwan Singh and Shyam Singh assured Pankaj Kumar to provide him a job of ticket checker in railways if he paid them Rs 1.5 lakh.
Pankaj gave them the money. However, even after the passage of six months, when they failed to manage the job for him, he got suspicious of them.

A one-day-old girl baby was found abandoned in the emergency ward of SMGS hospital today.
