| J&K Congress factional wrangle reaches Rahul | | | |

Jammu, July 21: As number of Congress leaders from Jammu and Kashmir grows in New Delhi –some on thanksgiving visit after becoming Ministers and others fanning factional strife –the tension in state unit of party today moved few notches up with dissidents taking the murky wrangle to AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
Meanwhile, in a related development, the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also in Delhi, had a meeting with the Pradesh Congress Committee president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz to discuss the latest development emerging out of internal strife within Congress.
A delegation of dissident Congress leaders had already, last week, met the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and now the issue has reached Rahul Gandhi. Sources said that Sonia had last week heard the complaints of J&K Congress leaders patiently but she did not give her mind to the dissident camp over what she plans to handle the situation.

New Delhi, July 21: Government on Tuesday said women are being trained in Pakistan and PoK for carrying out militant activities and there are inputs indicating link "between terorrist elements and individuals from Bihar". "There are reports to indicate that women are being trained in Pakistan and PoK for terrorist activities," Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Maken said in a written reply in Lok Sabha. He added that Pakistan and PoK based terrorist groups including the Laskar-e-Taiba are reported to be active in organising acts of terror. "Available inputs indicate link between terrorist elements and individuals from Bihar," the Minister said.

The total eclipse, which starts at sunrise in Surat in Gujarat, is expected to last six minutes and 44 seconds, making it the longest till 2132.

SRINAGAR: A police officer was killed and three of his junior colleagues were injured when suspected militants fired a rifle grenade at a police camp in a south Kashmir village on Tuesday, an official said.
Guerrillas fired one grenade at the camp of the special operation group (SOG) of police at Imam Sahib village in south Kashmir Shopian district, around 60 km from here. The SOG is a specially trained anti-terrorist unit of the Jammu and Kashmir police.
The grenade landed just inside the security camp injuring four policemen. The injured were taken to a hospital where one assistant sub inspector succumbed to his injuries.

The Indian Army has ordered an inquiry into the firing during a recruitment drive a day ago in Chandauli district of Uttar Pradesh in which one person was killed and another injured.
Many candidates at the army's recruitment camp in Chandauli district on Sunday had indulged in arson and vandalism alleging irregularities in the screening of candidates, forcing the military police to open fire. "We have ordered a court of inquiry into the incident," a senior Indian Army official said, requesting anonymity.

Jammu, July 21: The country has around 15 per cent IPS officers from the reserved categories of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, the Lok Sabha was informed Tuesday.
Amongst a total of 3,327 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, 485 officers are from the reserved category—328 from the SC and 157 from the ST.
"The total number of IPS officers serving in the country as on January 1, 2009 is 3,327," Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Maken said in a written reply.

Islamabad July 21: Keeping hopes alive for the Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, his new lawyer, Owais Sheikh, will file a fresh mercy petition in the Lahore bench of the Pakistan Supreme Court on Tuesday.
Sarabjit’s lawyer, while talking to a news channel, said that he had also despatched a mercy plea of his client to President Asif Ali Zardari. Sarabjit’s earlier mercy petition was dismissed by ex-Pak President General Musharraf.
The mercy plea will be filed in the wake of rejection of a similar appeal by the apex court earlier mainly due to the non-appearance of Sarabjit’s lawyer Rana Abdul Hamid during the court’s proceedings defying a SC notice in this regard.

New Delhi July 21: The government Tuesday said in order to further increase the AIR coverage all over the country, 200 new transmitters have been approved under the 11th five year plan.
"The government has approved 200 new transmitters in the spillover scheme under the 11th five year plan to further increase the AIR coverage in the country," Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting S Jagathrakshakan said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
He said the Doordarshan has 1,416 transmitters, while All India Radio has 374.
The minister said at the time of formation of Prasar Bharti, there were 924 transmitters of Doordarshan and 299 of the AIR.

Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Ahluwalia on Tuesday ruled out any more stimulus package for industry as the Budget has given a substantial boost to the slowing economy.
"The Budget includes a very stringent boost, plan expenditure and investment ... We don't need any more stimulus packages," Ahluwalia told reporters here.
"We should concentrate on implementing what is there," he said. The Government has cut excise duty by six percent and service tax by two percent in three stimulus packages. Besides, the fourth stimulus package was given in the Budget for 2009-10.
