Omar proposes, Defence ministry opposes revocation of AFSPA | Confrontation brewing! | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 22: In blatant rebuttal to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's recent assertion of revoking Armed Forces Special Powers Act-1990 from certain districts in Jammu and Kashmir, defence ministry on the reports submitted by army has opposed the same.
Defence ministry in its written communiqué to the government of India through union ministry of home affairs has reiterated that situation may not be right as yet to consider review of continuation of AFSPA J&K in view of the continuing armed infiltration, and sometimes in very large numbers, from across the Line of Control (LOC).
Army referred to continued support to militancy from across the border and urged the centre not to withdrawn this provision which would embolden the separatists and other anti-national elements, asserted sources. Withdrawing this provision from central act would demoralize forces fighting militancy in various parts of country including Jammu and Kashmir since they would have to face local courts even over false and frivolous complaints; army has reportedly told the centre.

Omar wants AFSPA to go, impunity to stay | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 22: At last the Chief Minister admitted that the Disturbed Area Act and the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) were draconian. Although the Northern Command Headquarters strongly contested his views, yet Omar won many an admirer. However, knowledgeable quarters have criticized Omar for his contradictory views. According to them, Omar wants impunity under AFSPA to go but by talking about Truth and Reconciliatory Commission, he actually intends to confer impunity to the perpetrators in a refined form
The Chief Minister has been talking about TRC for the past two years. Last month when the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) shocked the government by i...
| | Not only NC but PDP too deserves credit if AFSPA withdrawn | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 22: Is the security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir conducive for the withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA)? It may not be totally favourable for removing from the entire state but the experiment could be carried out in areas where the level of militancy related activities has touched zero.
Now that Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, has given a clear indication that the AFSPA and the Disturbed Areas Act (DAA) were to be withdrawn shortly from some areas of Jammu and Kashmir it needs to be fully reciprocated by the separatists in the shape of abandoning their usual practices of giving calls for shutdown and protest rallies. Repeal of the AFSPA a...

| | Desperate move of frustrated NC to woo Kashmiri constituency | Revocation of AFSPA | | Rustam
JAMMU, Oct 22: The NC, which is gripped by an extreme sense of insecurity, frustration and despondency, is desperate to salvage its position through desperate moves overlooking the stark realty that it has already missed the bus. It did not performance and deliver during all these more than 33 months of its rule. Besides, it utterly failed to provide a transparent, humane, accountable and corruption-free administration. It would be no exaggeration to say that the state never got such a non-functional and controversial government after 1947. Frankly speaking, the plight of the people of the state was never so miserable as it has been since January 5, 2009, when the NC recaptured powe...

| | Azad, Omar and uneven development of Bhadrwah | Ignoring Machail Mata | | Neha
JAMMU, Oct 22: Union Health Minister and former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was not indulging in mere political demagoguery when he blamed the Omar Abdullah-led government for slow pace of developmental works in Bhaderwah and other parts of the erstwhile Doda district, which he intriguingly chose to refer as "Chenab region", which is non-existent. (Has he been influenced by Dixon plan/Farooq Kathwari/Musharaf formula?) He was simply stating a hard reality. Major developmental schemes initiated by his government are merely a few months away from completion if work is allowed to go on a normal pace in the area. For example, the road connecting the area with Chamba region of Hima...
