TOP STORY OF THE DAY
Public Service Commission finally goes defunct, Jandial last man standing
10/6/2014 11:58:13 PM
Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Oct 6: With retired IAS officer Kulbhushan Jandial being the last man in office, Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) is virtually now a defunct institution. Chairman of the Commission Shiban Lal Bhat, who retired as Financial Commissioner (FC) Finance and was later appointed to head PSC completed his term on September 11 this year. Known for keeping a low profile and remaining away from controversies, Bhat left the commission the day his term ended. Sources said that Bhat notified the government about the vacancies and also told them about his inability to continue further. With Bhat demitting the office, PSC is left with lone member Kulbhushan Jandial, whose term is also expiring on November 16, 2014 i.e. exactly a month and 10 days from today. If the pace at which state government has been moving vis-à-vis appointment of members and other important functionaries in various autonomous, government-funded and semi-government institutions is taken into account, PSC story is unlikely to be any different. The institution has already become...

Jaibans Singh10/6/2014 11:34:39 PM
Apropos an article "Unwrapping the soldier from the flag - Kashmir after the flood" by Chirag Thakkar (a supposed Delhi University research scholar) carried by Kashmir Times, a local Jammu based English newspaper and as a guest post by a blog kafila.org. In the article the author has accused the Indian media of "insensitivity" by "valourising the Jawan involved in the flood rescue operation." He has also accused the Indian army of "systematic use of torture" on the civilian population of Kashmir. The article exhibits appalling journalism in its content and context neither of which is based on facts or empirical evidence. These are mere accusations wrapped in high sounding English t...

Bashir Assad Srinagar, Oct 6: Though Muslims all over the world are celebrating Eid-ul- Azha with great enthusiasm and traditional religious fervor, but the people in flood ravaged Srinagar have little reason to enjoy the day even the ever busy Lal Chowk present a dismal look on auspicious Eid. As the devastating floods hit the capital city and wreaked unimaginable havoc, the enthusiasm of celebrating Eid virtually is missing in Srinagar this year. Once the capital town Srinagar started to witness swarm shoppers even many days ahead of the auspicious occasion but this year it was very rare thing to see. If recalled just two months ago people would flood the commercial hub of Lal Chowk a...
