KATHUA, NOV 5 – The valiant tradition of the patriotic people of this town of Jammu region of defending their motherland from repeated covert and overt assaults from across the borders was hailed today by a large gathering that observed Martyrs Day here today amid distinguished guests and dignitaries. This historic day to commemorate the memory of countless martyrs from the town was observed for the 11th time on this day at the call of Lok Sabha member from Doda-Udhampur Parliamentary seat, Mr Lal Singh.
Among others the Deputy Chief Minister Mr Tara Chand was present to welcome chief guest and Union Minister for Health and Medical Education, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, who honoured martyrs by garlanding their portraits and expressing solidarity and unstinted Government support to the martyrs’ families and dependents who often lost their breadwinners in the fight to defend their country and fellow citizens.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today frowned upon the practice of adopting summary court martial proceedings to sack lower rank army personnel and directed the Chief of the Army Staff Gen Deepak Kapoor to explain if there are any guidelines to prevent its abuse.
A bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and H L Dattu at one stage threatened to summon the Army chief to the court as the union government failed to explain adequately whether proper guidelines are in place to prevent abuse of the colonial era method of dealing with erring army personnel.
However, the court later relented and directed the Army Chief to file an affidavit within three weeks.

New Delhi: Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni on Thursday said the government was assessing the request of media houses to scale up FDI from the existing 26 to 49 percent in the print media and promised her support to the recession-hit magazine business in India.

The plea was made by Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers’ Party chief Bhim Singh, who appeared before a bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and apprised it of his lawsuit filed in the apex court’s registry.
