| PM : Terrorism be considered federal crime | | | | New Delhi | May 18
Four days after the Jaipur bomb blasts, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, for the first time, made a strong pitch for designating offences like terrorism and drug smuggling as federal ones — to be investigated by a central agency.
But he also hinted that Delhi would not let terrorist attacks like the Jaipur one to vitiate the next round of foreign ministers’ level Indo-Pak talks scheduled next week: that would amount to playing into the hands of the terrorists.
“It (tackling offences like terrorism) is not a task which can be effectively discharged by a single agency of any particular state,” he said at a press conference in Bagdogra on his way back to Delhi after a “very successful” two-day visit to Bhutan. “But so far, there is a reluctance on the part of the states in cooperating in surrendering that power.”

Advocating a "bullet for bullet" approach to combat terrorism, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday said that terrorists have to be neutralised as otherwise they will kill innocents.
"How can you initiate talks with terrorists, who after attaining training from across the border, come to kill you. Either you have to kill him, otherwise you will be killed," Azad said, while speaking at a function organised by the Hind Samachar Group of newspapers to disburse Shaheed Parivar fund among terrorism affected families at Jalandhar.

As the role of the CRPF in anti-Naxalite and counter-insurgency operations was increasing, the para-military force has again proposed setting up a separate intelligence wing, notwithstanding earlier turning down of the suggestion by the Finance Ministry.
The proposal is pending with the Ministry and now a serious thought was being given to allow the CRPF to set up its own intelligence wing, officials in the Home Ministry said.

Fool-proof security will be in place for President Pratibha Patil’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir next week, officials here said. Security drills will start from Monday all across the state, especially in the twin- capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar, for the visit of the President- Patil’s first visit to the state since assuming office.
During the five-day visit commencing from May 23, Patil will also visit Tangdhar, a border town in the Kashmir Valley, where she will address the troops. THE INDIAN Institute of Technology (IIT), New Delhi, recently conducted a survey in Vaishno Devi, which revealed the economic impact of Rs 470 crore was pushing in annually due to the number of visitors to the holy cave in Jammu and Kashmir in Katra township, base camp of Mata Vaishno Devi.
Official sources claims that more than 75 lakhs pilgrims visited the holy shrine last year, and the infrastructure is being upgraded to meet the requirements of one crore pilgrims annually.
