New Delhi, June 30: The Centre today said the act giving special powers to the armed forces in Jammu and Kashmir was a "necessary tool" and noted that any decision on reducing the number of troops in the state will depend on the level of infiltration of terrorists.
"To deal with the situation effectively, the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) is a necessary tool that we have to give them (armed forces)," Minister of State for Defence M M Pallam Raju told reporters here.

Srinagar, June 30: The term of Justice (Retd) Muzaffar Jan Commission, probing the killing and rape of two women at Shopian in south Kashmir last month, was today extended by ten more days.
Justice Jan was appointed on June 1, after a massive protest across the Kashmir valley, by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to probe the incident and file the report within one month.

Jammu, June 30: A police spokesman late tonight said that the CRPF has been pulled out of Baramulla and has been replaced by the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
The spokesman said, “it has been decided to replace CRPF deployments in Baramulla with J&K Armed Police immediately”.

Islamabad, June 30: Pakistan has ruled out any possibility of shifting its troops from the eastern Indian border to the western border with Afghanistan.
Addressing a joint press conference with the ISPR spokesman Major General Athar Abbas here, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said Pakistan will not remove its military from the Indian border and deploy it along the western border with Afghanistan.
“We cannot and will not do it. Pakistan could not remain oblivious to the conventional threat,” The Dawn quoted Kaira, as saying.

New Delhi, June 30: India's Ambassador to China Nirupama Rao was on Tuesday named as the next Foreign Secretary to succeed Shivshankar Menon who will be retiring on July 31 after an eventful three-year stint as the top diplomat.
Rao, a 1973-batch IFS officer who has served in a number of key positions, will be the second woman Foreign Secretary of India after Chokila Iyer.

New Delhi, June 30: The Liberhan Commission on Tuesday submitted its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, bringing to an end 17 years of investigation into the 1992 demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.
Retd Justice M S Liberhan, who headed the Commission that got 48 extensions, submitted the report to the Prime Minister in the presence of Home Minister P Chidambaram.
