With violent protests over the Amarnath land transfer issue continuing unabated in Jammu and Kashmir, Governor N N Vohra on Thursday held an all-party meeting of mainstream political parties in the state to discuss a way to resolve the matter.
The meeting was called by Vohra at short notice to discuss the prevailing situation in the state and to find a way out of it, official sources said.
Abdul Rahim Rather (National Conference), Mehbooba Mufti (PDP), Sofi Yousuf (BJP), Bashir Ahmad Kothoo (National Panthers' Party), M Y Tarigami (CPIM) and Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen (PDF) were among those who attended the meeting chaired by the Governor, they said.
Vice-chancellor of Kashmir university Professor Riyaz Punjabi and Vice chancellor of Islamic University for Science and technology Professor Sidiq Wahid were among the others who participated in the parley.
At least 21 persons including senior Hurriyat Conference leader Sheik Abdul Aziz were killed and hundreds were injured in police action during the last three days.

As rolling of heads has become a part of the ongoing crises which Jammu and Kashmir is facing on Shri Amarnath Shrine land row, a top officer of a Central Paramilitary Force has been removed from his position in Kashmir following firing on protesters which saw around 20 people killed in different parts of Valley.
It was an unfortunate turn of events that Jain had been recommended for this year’s President’s Medal for meritorious services. The list, reports said, carried the name of Sunil Jain for the President’s medal but the same was taken out by the Home Minister after his removal from Kashmir on recommendations of the Governor NN Vohra.

Amidst the signs of some normalcy returning to the region on Shri Amarnath Shrine land row, yet another person has committed suicide with a clear note that he is offering his life for the cause.
This was eleventh death in Jammu region during the ongoing agitation. Including today’s case, two persons have committed suicide, four died in Police firing (two in Kishtwar and two in Samba), one died in Army firing in Kathua, two dies of mysterious firing in Samba, one died of grenade wounds while another passed away after being injured in a Police chase in the old city area. The United Nations is monitoring the situation in Kashmir and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is aware of it, according to a spokesman of the world body.
UN human rights officials in Geneva are also aware of it and are "determining whether to make any comment," associate spokesman Farhan Haq said on Wednesday when asked by a a Pakistani correspondent whether the UN is aware that Kashmir is suddenly becoming a 'hot spot'.

Offering a bonanza to its about 55 lakh employees, the government on Thursday approved new pay scales that would give them an average increase of 21 per cent, a move that would cost the exchequer Rs 22,131 crore.
The windfall pay revision, announced on the eve of the country's 62nd Independence Day, would be implemented from September 1, this year and the government employees would get 32 months' arrears, that too with significant improvements over the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.

At least eleven laborers most of them non-local were killed and another injured, when a truck they were traveling in skidded off the road and rolled down in deep gorge at deep gorge near Anokhi fall at Batri-Chashma near Ramban on Jammu Srinagar National Highway this morning.
Sources said that a truck carrying laborers most of them non-local rolled down at Batri-Chashma resulting in on the stop death of eleven persons and injuries to another who is said to be the driver of the truck.

After being on the boil for three days, Kashmir valley remained by and large peaceful on Thursday barring stray violence while a top CRPF officer was removed from violence-hit Srinagar to calm tempers following criticism over the paramilitary force's handling of the unrest.
