Vohra makes peace bid

Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Aug 14 With violent protests over the Amarnath land transfer issue continuing unabated in Jammu and Kashmir, Governor N N Vohra on Thursday held an all-party meeting of mainstream political parties in the state to discuss a way to resolve the matter. The meeting was called by Vohra at short notice to discuss the prevailing situation in the state and to find a way out of it, official sources said. Abdul Rahim Rather (National Conference), Mehbooba Mufti (PDP), Sofi Yousuf (BJP), Bashir Ahmad Kothoo (National Panthers' Party), M Y Tarigami (CPIM) and Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen (PDF) were among those who attended the meeting chaired by the Governor, they said. Vice-chancellor of Kashmir university Professor Riyaz Punjabi and Vice chancellor of Islamic University for Science and technology Professor Sidiq Wahid were among the others who participated in the parley. Early Times Reporter Jammu | Aug 14 Amidst the signs of some normalcy returning to the region on Shri Amarnath Shrine land row, yet another person has committed suicide with a clear note that he is offering his life for the cause. This was eleventh death in Jammu region during the ongoing agitation. ET MONITORING DESK Jammu | Aug 14 The United Nations is monitoring the situation in Kashmir and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is aware of it, according to a spokesman of the world body. New Delhi | Aug 14 Offering a bonanza to its about 55 lakh employees, the government on Thursday approved new pay scales that would give them an average increase of 21 per cent, a move that would cost the exchequer Rs 22,131 crore. The windfall pay revision, announced on the eve of the country's 62nd Independence Day, would be implemented from September 1, this year and the government employees would get 32 months' arrears, that too with significant improvements over the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.
