TOP STORY OF THE DAY
J&K Bank mostly prefers non-state subjects for loans, other credit facilities
59 percent goes to corporates, meager 17 percent to locals
9/11/2011 11:17:28 PM
Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Sept 11: While extending loans and other credit facilities, Jammu and Kashmir Bank has given far-reaching preference to non-state subjects especially corporate houses over local business entrepreneurs and small unit holders. Bank has cited credit risk as reason for not extending hassle free loans to state subjects and maintained that it has only small portion of credit mix directly exposed to credit risks from political disturbances in the state. Figures released indicate that 59 percent of the bank's loan book as of financial year 2011 is outside the state of Jammu and Kashmir, of which 57.5 percent is towards corporates. These revelations have been made by Angel Broking, a respected national stock-broking and wealth management company, in its credit report of Jammu and Kashmir Bank released on August 9, 2011. The report is based on technical and derivative analysis centered on studying charts of a stock's price movement, outstanding positions and trading volume, as opposed to focusing on a company's fundamentals and, as such, the report may not matc...

9/11/2011 11:16:14 PM
Asif Iqbal Naik KISHTWAR, Sept 11: Investigating agencies and media have been slammed by the parents of the youth detained in connection with the Delhi high court terror email traced to global internet cyber cafe in the town here. Ashwani Kumar, an employee of the cyber cafe, and Shoaib Mushtaq (18) were detained after the email was traced to Kishtwar. Ashwani's father Hukum Chand, who runs a teastall here, said his son was not an employee of the cyber cafe as was being claimed by police and media. He said cyber cafe owner Mehmood Khawaja was a regular visitor to his shop. "As my son was interested in doing a course in computer education, Khawaja promised to teach him if he sat in the sh...

Wikileaks spares central govt; also forgets CMs promoting land grabbing, loot
9/11/2011 11:15:03 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 11: Wikileaks has not spared anyone. From deported Pakistani General Musharraf to flip-flop separatist Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, all have been exposed in one way or the other but surprisingly it is silent over `misdeeds' of the government of India. About Mayawati, the Wikileaks quoting Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) general secretary Satish Chandra Misra said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati was corrupt. Satish has strongly contested the report. "Well, Mayawatiji took oath as the chief minister on May 13, 2007, and the Wikileaks cable is purported to have been sent barely two weeks after that... can you imagine anyone in my position making that kind of a statemen...

Equitable development or equitable neglect? Omar must ponder
9/11/2011 11:14:44 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 11: While his government cannot fill potholes on city roads, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Sunday said his government is striving for equitable development of all regions of the state and the amelioration of general public is the most important part of the development policy. A cursory look at the city roads in many parts of Jammu and Srinagar shows their appalling condition. Pedestrians and motorists have to walk and drive cautiously not to fall into uncapped manholes , vehicles take bumps strong enough to dislodge the kidney stones of patients and we have an unmindful Chief Minister talking of equitable development for far flung areas ...

Sense of alienation in Kashmir too deep, says Wajahat Habibullah
The Dying Of The Light
9/11/2011 11:14:22 PM
Rustam JAMMU, Sept 11: Former bureaucrat and the so-called expert in Kashmir affairs Wajahat Habibullah, who once recommended creation of five regional assemblies in the state, two each in Jammu and Ladakh and one for the Kashmir, has come out with a new book dealing with the circumstances leading to the "conflict in Kashmir". He has also suggested a solution to the Kashmir issue. The book is titled "My Kashmir: The Dying of the Light". It was published by Penguin Books this month. I have not studied this book so far. I have read only what he told media persons the day before yesterday, which was carried by a section of print media. Hence, it would not be possible for me make an elaborate...

Bhim forgets Agenda 2011, PP back to square one
Dogras' Empowerment
9/11/2011 11:13:50 PM
Neha JAMMU, Sept 11: It was in January this year that the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (PP) of Bhim Singh adopted with much fanfare Agenda 2011. It was adopted after due deliberations and it was indeed a very comprehensive Agenda. "No truck with Kashmir and Kashmiri leadership. Enough is enough. Kashmiri leadership has converted Jammu into a colony. Kashmiri leadership has destroyed Jammu socially, culturally, politically and economically and the Jammu leadership has always sided with the Kashmiri leadership to jeopardize the Jammu's general political and economic rights. The Jammu leadership has played foul with Jammu to promote its self-interests. New Delhi has abandoned Ja...

9/11/2011 11:12:30 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 11: We are a democratic nation, with the right to return to the assembly and parliament persons of our choice. We expect our representatives to take up our cause in the assembly or parliament and help the respective governments to evolve and implement policies that take care of our legitimate aspirations and general civil, political, economic and social rights and interests. Jammu & Kashmir is part of the system that empowers people to elect a government of their choice and return to the assembly persons through whom they want to be represented. The people of Kashmir, barring those who quit the valley in early 1990 to save their lives and dignity and preserv...

Appeal to Hon'ble speaker by Shri Chaman Lal Gupta BJP MLA
9/11/2011 11:11:34 PM
Sir, I had raised a question during the last session of the state assembly seeking a reply from the government regarding the decision to stop government advertisements to the daily Early Times published from Jammu. I had also spoken about the highhandedness of the government and its arbitrary, whimsical dispensation regarding distribution of official advertisements to the various newspapers published in the state. Despite repeated requests, the state government did not come forward with any reply to my question and the result has been that through its decision to ignore my question the state government has covertly accepted that it does not have a reasonable answer to my question. Hon'b...
