Higher Education Deptt ignores sports proficiency
10/26/2014 11:50:36 PM
Abodh Sharma Jammu, Oct 26: Even though State government granted jobs to outstanding sportsmen under SRO 349, the Higher Education Department of Jammu and Kashmir continues to ignore outstanding sportsmen by not allocating any quota for admissions to meritorious sportsmen in its colleges across the state in undergraduate and post graduate courses. It is strange that while universities of the state offer quota for outstanding sportspersons besides those who have excelled in NCC, NSS, cultural and extra curricular activities, in their PG programs, degree colleges, which have been governed by the Department of Higher Education, have no provision to reserve seats for such achievers. "I have won tens of medals for the state in various national championships besides representing the country in so many international events, but I may be denied admission in the college of my choice as I have not scored a high percentage of marks in my SSC exam," said a sportswoman of high repute and also recipient of prestigious state award. "There should be some seats reserved for outstanding sportspe...

10/26/2014 11:50:24 PM
Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Oct 26: At a time when state BJP leaders are faced with severe public criticism for not taking up pro-Jammu issues at the appropriate platforms and then pretending to be pleading the cause of Jammuites, Congress leader Sham Lal Sharma, who Friday last resigned as Flood Control Minister, shot into limelight with one stroke today when he said he had sacrificed his Ministry for the cause of daily wagers of Jammu region. His resignation is perfectly timed and is expected to infuse some confidence in the Congress cadres hitherto demoralised by the Modi wave which they feel is likely to have a great impact in Jammu region too. The people here have been raising voice from...

10/26/2014 11:49:26 PM
Neha JAMMU, Oct 26: Former J&K Chief Minister and presently Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who himself suffered the worst-ever defeat in his long political career in the last Lok Sabha elections at the hands of the BJP candidate in the Kathua-Udhampur-Doda constituency, has launched the biggest-ever attack on the NC-Congress coalition government in general and NC in particular. Without mincing words he had on Saturday said that the Congress is paying the price of unpopularity because of its alliance with the NC and the present government has lost the people's confidence. While launching the blistering attack, he completely overlooked the fact that the party to ...

Mismanagement continues at GMC
Charge fee for using toilets
10/26/2014 11:49:13 PM
G S Asgotra Jammu, Oct 26: Instead of mending their ways to improve management at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H), the administration has put forward one more step in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode, by giving a toilet complex of hospital to private hands and has started charging fee for its usage. Sources informed Early Times that few months back, the GMC&H administration had handed over the diagnostic equipments to private hands under the same PPP mode, probably for better maintenance and smooth functioning of the diagnostic equipments and in the new turn, administration has also handed over public toilet complex to private hands. "It seems that the administrati...

10/26/2014 11:49:01 PM
Sanjay Pathak / Kunal Shrivatsa KATHUA, Oct 26: In an ideological somersault, the former Member of Parliament (MP) and senior Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Lal Singh while launching a scathing attack on first Prime Minister of India Jawahar Lal Nehru and former Chief Minister of the state Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah said Monday that both were responsible for ruining the state of J&K. Coming out openly on a BJP platform for the first time following his entry into the party in August last after quitting Congress, the senior BJP leader Lal Singh minced no words in putting blame of all ills affecting the state on Nehru and Sheikh Abdullah as he vociferously said that both the leaders pur...

Cornered Omar accuses EC of favouring his foes
Writing on the wall
10/26/2014 11:48:42 PM
Rustam JAMMU, Oct 26: The ruling NC is passing through a very critical phase. There are political pundits who say that the NC, like the Congress, may not survive after the assembly elections. Roundly criticized NC working president and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the portfolio of Home, is fully aware of the difficulties he and his party are face to face with. The situation has climaxed to the point that practically none in the state and outside trust him. The people of Kashmir Valley have practically abandoned the NC and they have either turned towards the PDP or looking for other options. Even the Congress, which shared state power with Omar Abdullah for almost s...

HoDs give slip to ministers ahead of MCC
10/26/2014 11:48:22 PM
Bashir Assad Srinagar, Oct 26: While leaving the Ministers clueless several Heads of Department (HoD) of various departments had proceeded on leave to avoid any kind of pressure from the concerned ministers for favors. As the ministers in the NC-Congress coalition government were in a haste to make their best before the MCC comes into effect, the pressure was likely to fall on HoDs. The officers knew that their ministers will ask them to do everything in violation of the prescribed norms ahead of the enforcement of MCC. Sources said that as many as 15 HoDs of very important departments had proceeded on leave before Diwali and did not return to their duties till ECI imposed the MCC in J...

Is Shabnam Lone joining BJP?
Setback to separatists
10/26/2014 11:41:27 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 26: Is the Supreme Court lawyer, daughter of the slain protagonist of Kashmir's independence Abdul Gani Lone, sister of well-known India-baiters and separatists Bilal Lone and Sajjad Lone -- author of Achievable Nationhood -- and a bitter critic of the Indian presence in Kashmir, Shabnam Lone, joining the BJP? Why this question, which would appear quite strange to her supporters and critics, at this point in time? Why because she has taken a stand on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kashmir on the Diwali day which is not consistent with the one taken by the Kashmiri separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and the Congress party. The stand she took...
