| Despite intimidation and violence, Valley reposes trust in Democracy | | Rural voter outclasses urban counterpart | | | Kunal Shrivatsa
JAMMU, May 1: From bad to worse, the turnout of 26 percent in Srinagar Parliamentary constituency could not even touch or cross the figure of 28 percent voting recorded in Anantnag Lok Sabha seat on April 24.
If Anantnag Parliamentary constituency registered a marginal increase of around one percent from 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the voting in Srinagar segment remained almost static in comparison to the last Lok Sabha polls-2009 wherein 25.55 percent of voters exercised their right to franchise.
The low turnout in Srinagar Lok Sabha seat is yet another blow to the efforts of mainstream political parties viz a viz the authorities, who worked hard day in and day out to improve the participation level of the Kashmiri people in the electoral process.
The trend of low voting in the last two phases of the ongoing general elections in Kashmir valley suggested that electors in this part of the country so far remained disconnected and refused to play a pro-active role in the world's biggest democracy.
But, putting aside all negativity with regard to election process i...

LEH, May 1: Gradually BJP is gaining ground in the cold desert and party is giving tough fight to the "strong" Congress on Ladakh Parliamentary seat-thanks to the effective campaign launched by the central leadership with the support of the state unit. The factions gripped Congress, which is strong force in Ladakh, finding it difficult to counter growing clout of BJP in the cold desert where the BJP was never a force to re...
| | | | NC should merge with Congress or vice-versa | | Made for each other | | | Rustam
JAMMU, May 1: The National Conference (NC) and the Congress are made for each other. Their ideology is almost the same. Their attitude towards the Valley and Jammu and Ladakh is the same. Their political attitude to the state itself is the same. There is no difference whatsoever. Their leadership belongs to the same sect and same ethnic group. Their stand on the BJP, NDA and Narendra Modi is the same. Their stand on Pakistan and Indian Constitution is also the same. Between 2009 and till date, they worked together; they contested elections together; and they accommodated each other as far as possible. Mustafa Kamaal's occasional statements against the Congress in general and JKPCC p...

| | | | PDP has an edge over NC in Srinagar LS seat | | | |
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, May 1: The famous couplet of the celebrated Urdu poet Mir Taqi Mir, " Ulti hogayi sab tadbeerein kuch ne dawa ne kaam kiya" hold good for National Conference. Despite all efforts, retaining the Srinagar seat seems to be difficult for the party as the main opposition PDP has made deep inroads in all three districts of Budgam, Srinagar and Ganderbal-the fact admitted by the top brass of NC privately. What could be termed as a shock for NC this time is that even boycott has not benefitted that party at all. According to the political watchers 60 to 65 % of the polled votes in eight assembly segments of Srinagar district have gone against NC candidate Dr. Farooq....
