SRINAGAR, May 6: Twenty -six-year old Dr Shah Faisal of Sogam, a far-flung village in Lolab valley of Kupwara district, today created history by becoming Jammu & Kashmir state's first topper of the Indian Civil Services examination in 63 years of the independent India. In its year-long exercise, Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has selected 875 incumbents out of 4.09 Lakh candidates who had applied in the country's toughest and the most prestigious competitive examination.
According to the UPSC notification issued today, Dr Shah Faisal of Sogam, Kupwara, (Roll No 025085) has stood at the top in the merit list of all the 875 candidates selected for the prestigious Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and all other central services in the year 2009. After completing his MBBS from Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Science (SKIMS) Medical College, Bemina in March 2009, Shah Faisal has got this historic distinction in his first attempt.

Mumbai, May 6: Justice was finally delivered to the 166 people who lost their lives in the 26/11 carnage here.
Seventeen months after the trial began, lone surviving Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab was Thursday sentenced to death for complicity in the most audacious terrorist attack ever on India.
Special Judge ML Tahaliyani, who conducted the trial of Kasab for nearly a year in the high-security central prison on Arthur Road in Central Mumbai, read out the death sentence at 1.28 pm to a packed court room, in Kasab's presence.

JAMMU, May 6: Violating the 1993 peace agreement today twice on the Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar sub-sector of Poonch, Pakistan today made unsuccessful attempts to push militants into India.
The infiltrations were, however, detected and foiled by the alert Indian troops both the times, official sources said.
Astonishingly, the ceasefire was violated twice in an interval of few hours, the sources added.
Sources said heavy exchange of fire between the two sides began in the evening and continued till late tonight.
Earlier in the morning, Pak troops opened fire, targetting Post No 68 at Balnoi in Mendhar. Indian troops guarding the post returned the fire.

Jammu, May 6: An alleged criminal was Wednesday arrested by police along with sharp-edged weapons at Aghar Jitto near the holy Katra town. Acting on a tip-off, cops in mufti laid a trap at Aghar Jitto last evening and intercepted a scooter.
During the scooter's checking, two sharp-edged weapons were recovered, police sources said.
Soon thereafter, the youth, who was identified as Balbir Chand of Karua, Katra, was arrested.
The accused worked in a shop in Aghar Jitto area. During the search of the shop, police recovered 300 liquor pouches, 300 grams of charas and eggs.
The sale of liquor and eggs is banned in and around the holy town of Katra.

JAMMU, May 6: In a bizarre incident, six to seven dogs were reportedly found dead after having administered 'poison' secretly in Jammu University campus this morning.
The bodies of dogs were noticed by the students near university dispensary and Department of Bio-Technology.

JAMMU, May 6: Waking up from its deep slumber, the Traffic Police Department today launched an extensive drive against the violators and seized 22 school vehicles including autorickshaws and mini-buses ferrying students to and fro from their residences under various sections of Transport Act.
Besides, the cops also challaned 800 vehicles and realized a fine to the tune of Rs 88,000 from offenders.

Jammu, May 6: Sessions court Kulgam today held an Ikhwani guilty of killing an innocent civilian. The punishment, however, is likely to be announced on May 15.
On December 22, 2002 Nazir Ahmad Wagay of Baghbal, Kulgam forced entry into the house of Abdul Hamid Teli of Khokherhama around 1300hrs and opened indiscriminate fire.
Teli died on the spot as his sister Rafeeqa sustained injuries. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition. However, she survived the attack.
