JAMMU, Aug 25: Even as with two newly appointed judges assuming offices, the State Accountability Commission has become functional, scepticism rides high across J&K among common people on whether it would be able to serve the purpose of checking rampant corruption , hundreds of cases of which have gathered dust in the dumped files of the Commission for the last two over years.
At a time when the entire country is up in arms against the menace of corruption, SAC is faced with the burgeoning task of reopening the cases and looking into them afresh dozens of which are against former ministers, present ministers, high ranking officers in the present administration who continue to enjoy plum and prize postings.
According to sources there are around 245 complaints against former and present ministers, MLAs and ex MLAs of various political parties of pending before the Commission. The complaints apparently pertain to the corruption, misuse of power, misappropriation of funds, bunglings and illegal appointments.

JAMMU, Aug 25: Police and intelligence agencies are probing militant links and illicit relationships of a well-connected and high-profile Superintendent of police (SP), presently posted in Jammu.
Sources said that surveillance of mobile phone calls of the said officer led to these revelations. Though it is not known whether the said officer is involved in shielding anti-national elements or not but his relationships with wife of a Pakistan trained militant have been confirmed by police higher ups, on the condition of anonymity.

JAMMU, Aug 25: Taking no chances, the government yesterday ordered release of Hurriyat (G) leaders Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai and Ghulam Nabi Sumji. Ten others were released as well. The release has come a few days after Syed Ali Geelani threatened `peaceful' agitation after Eid in case the political prisoners were not released.
Geelani's threat was taken very seriously by the government. It evoked a response from the former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah. Addressing Geelani he said: " Geelani Sahib strikes and agitation will burn 'destroy Kashmir".

RAJOURI, Aug 25: An ex-militant is alleged to have kidnapped a married woman from village Bhangai under the jurisdiction of police station Thanamandi in the border district of Rajouri.
Police is looking for the kidnaper but he is believed to be at large.
