TOP STORY OF THE DAY
Cong-PDP closeness increasing NC's discomfort
8/8/2011 12:02:37 AM
Syed Junaid Hashmi EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 7 : Much to the discomfort of National Conference (NC), Congress and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) bonhomie is no secret now with leaders of both the parties calling each other natural allies. If leaders of congress are to be believed, PDP is its natural ally since the clash of interests is minimal between the two. They say that PDP is Kashmir based and has focused all along on strengthening its cadre only across Kashmir valley while congress despite being a national party has won majority of its assembly and parliamentary seats from Jammu region. Congress leaders do not hesitate in saying that they find being with PDP more comfortable than with National Conference (NC) where they have been playing second fiddle since the day coalition came into being. They say that PDP did not violate coalition dharma. "It stood where it was. PDP never crossed the dividing line. It allowed congress to strengthen party network across Jammu region and kept itself confined to valley alongwith certain parts of Rajouri-Poonch region," said a congres...

Soz's fresh political salvo: Cong striving to empower panchayats through 73rd,74th amendments
Dissent continues between NC, Congress on 'empowerment' issue….?
8/8/2011 12:01:50 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 7 : The NC-Congress ties which have turned fragile in the past over a host of key issues once again appear to heading towards edge with dissent and differences still persisting among the allies over empowerment of Panchayats through what Congress has been desiring and asking for right from the beginning- incorporating 73rd and 74th amendments of Indian constitution into the state Panchayati Raj Act. If the statement of the Pradesh Congress Chief Prof Saif-uDin Soz at a public meeting is to be read between the lines and politically deciphered, Congress leadership at the local level has once again started asserting on this issue even as the ruling NC may consi...

Would 'deliberate leaks' obfuscate truth?
8/7/2011 11:41:40 PM
Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 7: The arrest of two selection grade constables posted at special operations group (SOG) Sopore camp in connection with the custodial killing of Nazim Rashid Shalla has finally set the investigating ball rolling. It can be hoped with a reasonable measure of anticipation that the noose is ultimately going to tighten around the neck of those who have little regard for propriety and justice as they get drunk with unbridled power. The latest in this series of bizarre and horrible drama is the obvious 'leak' about the sms sent by the then Sopore superintendent of police to the police chief regarding the so-called confession of the youth that he was involved in th...

Employees' strike adds to peoples woes, government still adamant
Avoidable Confrontation
8/7/2011 11:41:17 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 7: Convinced that the NC-Congress coalition government would not concede their demands ranging from release of arrears as per the sixth pay commission's recommendations to enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60 years to regularization of daily wagers and so on, the poor employees struck work for two days on August 5 and 6, thus adding to the woes of the people. They had hoped that the action would make the government see reason and concede their genuine demands. But it has not happened. The result is that the hapless employees have decided to again boycott work on September 6, 7 and 8 to be followed by the secretariat gherao on September 9 across the stat...

Attitude of Karan Singh, BJP & Jammu-based NC leaders-II
Central University
8/7/2011 11:15:34 PM
Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Aug 7: Remember, in February 2002, all the eight BJP MLAs had made common cause with the NC when the NC-led "anti-Jammu" government moved an amendment to the constitution seeking ban on delimitation of the assembly constituencies for at least 35 years because the BJP thought the adoption of the anti-democratic and unconstitutional amendment would promote the "just cause of Jammu." Again, remember, 7 out of 11 BJP MLAs voted for the NC and the Congress candidates seeking election to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council on April 13 this year and they did so for what? Obviously, to promote the Jammu cause! Again, in 2008, while one BJP MLA had voted for Fa...
