Army objects to Omar Govt 'demilitarising' Srinagar | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 30: In the aftermath of Monday's shootout in Srinagar in which a policeman and three terrorists were killed, the Army has raised a series of questions on the Omar Abdullah government's stance on repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act and thinning of troops in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a media release Tuesday, a spokesman of the army's Northern Command said the incident at Qamarwari took place because of a "demilitarized Srinagar."
"Terrorists have once again shown their presence for the second time in a month as if to remind the world that militancy was still alive and kicking in Kashmir," the spokesman said, adding: "The clamour to remove bunkers and thin out the police/paramilitary presence from the urban areas had compelled the Omar Abdullah government to give in."
"Though it appeared to be a well considered decision, but the latest incident has raised many questions. While it may have pleased a few hardline separatists and their ISI handlers in Pakistan, but what about the common man in the valley," the spokesman asked.

100 joined militant ranks this year: Khoda | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Nov 30: Director general of police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda today said 100 youth had joined militant ranks this year. While the number of militancy-related incidents was almost same this year as compared to the last year, 100 more had joined militant outfits this year, he told reporters here this afternoon.
There were 400 to 450 militants of different outfits active in the state, Khoda said.
Khoda said there was slight improvement in the situation as 450 militancy-related incidents were reported this year till November 14 against 458 incidents last year.

NEW DELHI, Nov 30: Government on Tuesday said that former militants who crossed over to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) between 1989 and 2009 will be considered for return through its special rehabilitation policy.
"The policy proposed by state government for return of ex-militants from PoK or Pakistan to Jammu and Kashmir has been approved by Ministry of Home Affairs. SRINAGAR, Nov 30: One of the three militants killed in Monday's shootout in the city is a relative of National Conference Lok Sabha member Sharif-ud-din Shariq, police said.
Arshad Bashir, who was gunned down at Qammarwari in the summer capital, is a grandson of Shariq's brother-in-law, they said.
Shariq, a senior member of the ruling NC in Jammu and Kashmir, was elected to the Lower House of Parliament from Baramulla district in 2009.
