AHMED ALI FAYYAZ SRINAGAR, Feb 28: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s Advisor and the ruling National Conference’s four-time MLA and Chief Whip in J&K Legislative Assembly, Mubarak Gul, who is enjoying the protocol and status of a Cabinet Minister in Government of Jammu & Kashmir, has also turned out to be Government of India’s contractor as he has lately bagged a work order worth Rs 18 Lakh from Doordarshan. Even as Mr Gul believes that there was “nothing wrong” in his business with the Government, constitutional experts insist that any legislator indulging in such kind of a business with any state or Central government department is liable to disqualification from membership of the state legislature under different laws of the Constitution of Jammu & Kashmir. EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Feb 28: A moderate intensity tremor measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted Kashmir early Sunday, but no loss of life or damage to property was reported, officials said. "An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale hit the Valley at 4.51 am," Amir Ali, in charge of the disaster management cell for Kashmir province, told a news agency here. "We have not received any report of casualties or damage to property so far," he said. The official said the epicentre of the quake was located in the Hindukush mountain range of Afghanistan. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 28: Draped in tricolour, when the body of electrical engineer Bhola Ram, killed Friday last in a blast in Kabul, was consigned to flames at the Shastri Nagar cremation ground here, mourners bid him a tearful adieu. The body was flown to Jammu in SpiceJet Aircraft from New Delhi in the morning. From the airport, it was taken to his residence at Trikuta Nagar. It was brought to the Shastri Nagar cremation ground at about 1 pm and cremated with full honours. Guard of Honour was also given by JKP in his honour. EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Feb 28: Of the over one crore record tourists and pilgrims visiting the trouble-torn state last year, 82.35 lakh were the Vaishno Devi pilgrims. Apart from the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, other Hindu cave shrines in the state also witnessed an increase in footfalls.With the aim to attract more domestic and foreign tourists, the state government has already declared 2010 as "Visit Kashmir Paradise Awaits" year. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 28: In the two-decade long militant history of the state, over 650 political leaders and activists have been killed by militants across the state. Official sources said militants killed in the past 20 years at least 50 senior political leaders and over 600 political activists, besides 352 government officials, 10 members of judiciary and an equal number of journalists. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 28: A hideout of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants was busted by security forces near the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Official sources said a tip-off led jawans of special oeration group (SOG) of police and Rashtriya Rifles to a HM hideout in Ghanta forests of Poonch at about 2 am.The hideout was carved out by militants in the woods near the LoC, the sources added.
