EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 26: As tension today gripped Samba over an alleged police-cattle smuggler nexus coming to the fore after people caught hold of a cattle thief, at least 40 persons, including an additional SP and some duty magistrates, sustained wounds in clashes between protesters and cops. The angry people also set ablaze at least five trucks, stoned cops, besides smashing glass panes of several stranded vehicles and blocking the Jammu-Samba stretch of the national highway for over six hours. Section 144 was imposed in the town. Divisional commissioner Pawan Kotwal and IGP, Dr Ashok Gupta had a tought time in dealing with the situation. They visited the spot where protesters had made the cattle thief captive and blocked the road. They had to leave the spot twice following slogans against them when they expressed their inability to either suspend, or transfer SSP, Samba, Raghubir Singh. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, July 26: A top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant was killed and his close associate injured in a gunbattle with security forces at Anyar near Marwah in Kishtwar today. A defence spokesman said in a swift and surgical operation, a joint column of police and army killed a dreaded HM militant at Anyar. The slain militant was identified as Mohammad Ramzan, son of Abdul Raz Malik. One AK rifle, its magazines and one handgrenade were recovered from him. The spokesman said Ramzan's close associate Riaz Ahmed, who was wounded in the encounter, managed to flee. A massive operation was on to hunt him down, he added. The accused included Amrik Singh, son of Sampurn Singh, his brother Amarjeet Singh, Surinder Singh, son of Amar Singh, Raj Kumar son of Amar Nath, Vijay Kumar son of Ram Lal, Raman Kumar Gupta, son of Kameshwar Gupta, Mohan Singh, son of Bhajan Singh and Pawan Kumar, son of Shankar Dass. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, JULY 26: A "perverse" youth murdered his uncle by hitting him on the head with an iron rod in ward No 3 of Poonch on Sunday evening. The dead was identified as Santokh Singh (45), son of Khajoor Singh, and the accused as Roop Singh (30), son of Vakil Singh, both residents of ward No 3, Poonch. SSP, Poonch, Manmohan Singh said the incident occurred at about 6.30 pm when Santokh and his elder brother Vakil were going home. EARLY TIMES REPORT KATRA, JULY 26: Three persons, including two brothers, were today killed when a tipper in which they were travelling skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge at Sungli in Mahore area of Reasi. They were identified as tipper driver Mohammad Tariq, son of Abdul Latief of Mahore, Abdul Ahad, son of Kamaal Din, of Badora and his brother Ali Mohammad.
