TOP STORY OF THE DAY
Minister manhandled at SKIMS, DM chief gets VIP treatment
7/29/2011 11:21:58 PM
Ahmed Ali Fayyaz SRINAGAR, Jul 29: Lately appointed Director of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Dr Shaukat Ali Zargar, has allegedly manhandled Minister of Animal Husbandry, Science & Technology and Information Technology, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, alongwith his security guards and, at the same time, allotted a VIP Room to the outlawed Dukhtaraan-e-Millat Chairperson, Asiya Andrabi, at Jammu and Kashmir’s only tertiary care hospital. Attack on a Cabinet Minister by a public servant has put entire Council of Ministers in an awkward position even as a number of Ministerial colleagues are now asking Aga Ruhullah to get his dignity “restored” by Chief Minister and Speaker of Legislative Assembly. Authoritative sources revealed to Early Times that a number of Ministers and legislators have taken the July 26th “attack” on Aga Ruhullah seriously and they are likely to agitate the matter before Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Aga has been counseled to assert and get his dignity “restored” as acceptance of the attack mutely could encourage similar attacks by public ...

IAS Babus prevail over CM's New Delhi connections, refuse to return
7/29/2011 11:21:14 PM
Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, July 29: IAS Babus of Jammu and Kashmir cadre have seemingly prevailed over Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's widely acknowledged proximity with New Delhi. Chief Minister had written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who holds the portfolio of Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, seeking return of four IAS officers namely Rakesh Kumar Gupta, Arun Kumar Mehta, P.G. Dhar Chakraborty and Pradeep Tripathi. Sources said that all four have refused to return. Though they have cited different reasons for not returning to the state yet it has been reliably learnt that the refusal has more to do with the kind of postings these officers apprehend ...

SAC selection panel meeting today: Consensus unlikely to emerge on chairman
7/29/2011 11:20:56 PM
Saroj Razdan Jammu, July 29: Ahead of crucial meeting for reconstituting defunct State Accountability Commission in the state scheduled once again tomorrow, hectic political activity commenced today with all the three major parties- ruling NC and Congress as well as main opposition PDP, having members on the empowered selection panel on board, busy in trying to build some 'unanimity' for deciding on the choice of three member SAC panel , a process which has been stretched too long, over three years now. While coordination committee of ruling allies will meet formally tomorrow, PDP has also convened its party meeting to discuss the contenders who they deem 'appropriate and suitable' for t...

Bari Brahmana double murder: Poverty comes victim family's way for out of court settlement
7/29/2011 11:20:41 PM
Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, July 29: Worn out by acute poverty, Krishna Devi is almost reduced to a mental wreck. Her husband Sardari Lal was shot dead by "identified" assailants over a decade back. Every morning, she gets up, cursing Sardari's killers. The haunting sound of the gunfire has made her life uneasy. The hapless widow has four daughters to feed, with no source of income. Sardari was the only bread earner. In his absence, the family is passing through the toughest time of their lives. "I have not been able to cope with the incident. I am helpless in this regard," she says. She wonders if they really deserved the tragedy that almost ruined them. Her husband was killed on February ...

Is Congress led UPA Govt planning to force Anna to beat Ramdev type retreat?
7/29/2011 11:20:22 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, July 29: If not anybody else in the union cabinet it was the Minister for rural development, Jairam Ramesh, who wanted the Prime Minister to be under the Lokpal. Unfortunately his plea could not make any dent in the UPA Government's plan after the Union Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, snubbed Ramesh telling him that the image of the Government was built on its performance and on the work it does and not by keeping the Prime Minister under the Lokpal. But Ramesh had a point when he, while arguing in favour keeping the Prime Minister under the Lokpal, stated that by doing so the Government will improve its image and convince people that the UPA Government was c...

`Now pro-Indians beg for a berth at negotiating table'
7/29/2011 11:20:04 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, July 29: Last year's summer agitation has changed Kashmir. While the separatists have gained importance, the pro-Indian politicians have been pushed to the wall. This became clear during Pakistan Foreign Minister, Hina Rabbani Khar's recent visit to New Delhi. She called leaders from both factions of the Hurriyat conference to |Delhi for `talks'. They met her and discussed `God knows what'. It has been observed when Hurriyat leaders are called to New Delhi or Islamabad; they discuss Kashmiris rather than Kashmir. Any ways, Hina's meeting with separatists annoyed New Delhi. It also hit the nail on its head. Omar Abdullah felt isolated. "Pakistan Foreign Minist...

Move to restore pre 1953 position concern for nationalist forces
7/29/2011 11:19:50 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, July 29: Nationalist forces will fight tooth and nail any move to restore 1953 position which gives more concessions to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The government's tactical understanding with groups inimical to the unity and integrity of the country is fraught with dangerous consequences. Sources reveal that the powers that be are seriously contemplating to restore 1953 position to Jammu And Kashmir State. This exposes the state and central government's policy of surrender before anti national forces. Delhi Samiti President Rakesh Koul while interacting with groups of people at Jammu vehemently opposes the move and asked the people to be ready for nati...

BJP leadership appears to be blissfully ignorant
Khar-Separatists meet
7/29/2011 11:19:36 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, July 29: J&K unit of the BJP did make a valid point day before yesterday, when it took on the Congress-led UPA government for allowing a meeting between the visiting Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at New Delhi even before talks between her and Foreign Minister SM Krishna were held. It made another valid point when it said that meeting between Hina and separatists was ill-conceived and ill-motivated. Indeed, the meeting between Hina and the Kashmiri separatists constituted a "breach of protocol." But it has been happening since long. It happened even during the BJP regime. The fact of ...
