SRINAGAR, Jan 2: Separatist amalgam Hurriyat Conference's senior leader and former Chairman, Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, today dropped a veritable bombshell when he said at a JKLF seminar that it were Kashmiri militants, not the Indian Army or Police, who had killed intellectuals and leaders like Mirwaiz Maulvi Mohammad Farooq, Abdul Gani Lone and Prof Abdul Ahad Wani. He said that he had advised Valley's traders not to respond to calls of some radical leaders but they 'unfortunately' observed shutdown for five long months of year 2010 and multiplied the miseries of the Kashmiris.

JAMMU, Jan 2: Notwithstanding the strong pleas by some political groups, there are little chance of the thinning of security forces in the state.Official sources said that the state could not risk to withdraw troops at this stage when renewed efforts were being made to revive militancy in the state.

JAMMU, Jan 2 : For resisting the alleged move of some people to encroach upon a piece of land at Khiadian in Pouni near here today, a police Sub-Inspector (SI) and his friend were attacked and wounded. In retaliatory action, eight alleged encroachers were also injured, police sources said.

The planting of "fake" IEDs by some people allegedly in connivance with certain middle-rung army officials is becoming a new way in militancy-ridden Jammu and Kashmir to earn hefty cash rewards, official sources said.

JAMMU, Jan 2: Nearly 5,000 people have lost their lives in road accidents in the state in the past five years.This number if higher than the number of those killed in militancy during the corresponding period.
More than 900 people were killed in road accidents in the state in2010. The number is comparatively lower than 2009 when 1,109 people lost their lives in road accidents.
In 2008, the number of fatalities was 950, the same as in 2007.Nearly 1,000 persons were killed in 2006 in road mishaps across the state.

DODA, Jan 2: Three persons were today killed and 21 others wounded, some of them critically, after a minibus in which they were travelling skidded off the road and plunged into Chenab river at Kararra near Nai Basti army camp here.

Srinagar, Jan 2: The Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region were reeling under severe cold wave Sunday with Leh recording a minimum temperature of minus 23.6 degrees Celsius while Srinagar shivered at minus 2.4 degrees.
In Leh town, the minimum temperature was minus 23.6 degrees Celsius while it was minus 12.1 in Pahalgam hill station and minus 12.1 degrees in the ski resort of Gulmarg, said MS Wani of the meteorological department.
