Misuse of Govt vehicles dents exchequer
RTI goes in vain, SMG deny information
2/15/2013 12:42:33 AM
Bashir Assad JAMMU, Feb 14: Though the State Motor Garages has recently denied information under RTI on number of Government vehicles attached with Ministers and bureaucrats in the State on "security reasons", the fact remains that there is wanton misuse of Government vehicles in Jammu and Kashmir. The excessive fuel consumption dents the exchequer. Withholding the sought information speaks volumes about the misuse of vehicles and the excessive burden on the State exchequer which according to estimates runs in hundreds of crores. It has also punctured the tall claims of transparency and fairness. The unabated and unauthorized use of vehicles with red lights atop can be gauged from the fact that dozens of such vehicles can be seen waiting for hours in front of schools, hospitals, shopping malls, parks, and other unwanted places. Many politicians and bureaucrats can be seen violating rules even if they are not "statutorily entitled" to cars with red lights in the State. A question arises. Who is entitled to a Government vehicle besides Ministers and Administrative Secretaries to...

Omar's return of Guru's body salvo
2/15/2013 12:40:49 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 14: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah seems to have learnt a lesson or two on aggressive 'political posturing' from the prevailing political atmosphere across the country. He is seemingly doing the same to keep the vote bank in Kashmir intact. Even a primary class child would tell him to explain what he is doing with a party, which in the eyes of people of Kashmir valley hanged Afzal Guru. Congress Government issued the order for hanging of Afzal Guru and it was widely being speculated that Omar would give up the relationship with Congress. But he preferred otherwise, clamped curfew across the Valley, got his State police into action and managed peace on deserte...

In an interview to a national news gathering agency, Omar spoke both for Army as well for revocation of AFSPA. "Why is the AFSPA debate over? Who says? Why are you linking the two issues? Forget VD cards, play Hanuman
2/15/2013 12:41:19 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 14: After failing to play Hanuman, Shri Ram Sena (SRS) has hit a soft target to stay in news. The activists of the Sena torched a heap of Valentine cards outside Press Club here as part of their `crusade' against vulgarity and licentiousness. The Sena has evoked criticism for its silence on the Rath CD and molestation of a Jammu University student in police lock up. Pertinent to mention, the former SSP of Jammu was found guilty of violating the code of conduct by a magistrate. While interrogating an accused in Amandeep murder case, the SSP used abusive language against women. Shockingly the incident was ignored by the social and political circles. Simi...

Katju on press freedom
2/15/2013 12:41:47 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 14: Even as prominent journalists across the country have hailed Press Council of India (PCI) chairman, Markanday Katju's statement on use of advertisement muscle to muzzle the freedom of press, the over and covert means employed by the authorities (other than withholding advertisements) finds no mention anywhere. Expressing serious concern over `official blackmail', Katju said withholding advertisements to tame editors and newspaper owners was violative of Article 14 and 19(1) (a) of the Indian Constitution. The Press Council of India will not tolerate any further this kind of behavior on the part of any Government, its Ministers or Officials, and shall t...

2/15/2013 12:39:14 AM
Rustam JAMMU, Feb 14: Much has been written and continues to be written on the hanging of Parliament terror attack case convict Mohammad Afzal Guru and its consequences as if his hanging was an extraordinary event. It was not an extraordinary event: He had committed a heinous crime against the State and he paid the price. That's it. However, his hanging and the manner in which Kashmiri leaders, both "mainstream" and separatist, have been reacting to his hanging, as also the developments which unfolded, and continue to unfold, in Kashmir following his lawful hanging, have once again established that the State of Jammu and Kashmir is not just an unnatural formation like the Islamic Republic...
