LC polls: coalition partners hold meeting
3/28/2011 12:02:10 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 27: In run up to the forthcoming elections for the seats of Legislative Council, the two coalition partners National Conference and Congress held a meeting today to discuss the issues related to polls, seat sharing being the main agenda on which no agreement could materialise so far. The leaders of the alliance partners will meet tomorrow again to finalise things on this front, March 31 being the last date for filing nominating papers. Six seats, 3 each of Kashmir and Jammu region are falling vacant in the Upper House next month. Sources said both the alliance partners could not arrive at any consensus on the seat sharing issue as the political interests of both parties clashed on the number of seats each desires to contest. Sources said while NC has asked its major ally Congress to leave one seat for it in Jammu region, Congress is believed to have put its foot down maintaining that both the partners would contest on 3 seats each, which means that it contest all the three seats in Jammu and allow NC to contest all the three seats of Kashmir regi...

When Sher-e-Kashmir favoured division of JK
3/28/2011 12:00:49 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 27: Some voices though feeble have been demanding trifurcation of the state. This is not the first time when such voices have been heard. Even Sher-e-Kashmir favoured division of Jammu Kashmir (as suggested by Sir Owen Dixon) at one point of time. This stands proved by his letter to Col. Naseer of Egypt in 1965. The letter was published by a Jammu based newspaper and Muslim India a few years ago. While giving a brief history of the conflict and its impact on global politics, Sher-e-Kashmir wrote "……No doubt the best and most democratic solution could be through a plebiscite should this not be feasible, there are other practicable solutions, suggested in th...

CM's trendy gizmos, laptos and `conservative' legislators
3/28/2011 12:00:26 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Mar 27: Much to Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah's dismay, the MLAs have not been seen with their laptops during the past one year. The laptops were given to the legislators for maintaining records of their respective constituencies effectively. The conservative approach of the legislators has been seen as a major stumbling block to introduce use of technology in the day to day functioning of the Legislative Assembly. It is no secret that when Omar Abdullah flaunts his trendy gizmos other legislators envy him but irony is that they have not changed their mindset or realizing the importance of staying connected all the time for better world view and ease of comm...

One more nail in the Congress' coffin
3/27/2011 11:59:36 PM
NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 27: The J&K Legislative Assembly on March 26 once again witnessed noisy scenes. The issue that sparked heated exchanges was the insistence of the BJP, the JKNPP and the JSM MLAs that the government must set up a delimitation commission to delimit the Assembly constituencies de novo so that the people of Jammu province get their legitimate due share of representation in the law-making body and attain a status Kashmir enjoys in the state's polity. As was expected, the issue, which is very dear to the neglected people of Jammu province, didn't evoke any favourable response from the Kashmir-based legislators for reasons not difficult to fathom. With the resu...
