Cross Voting by 7 BJP MLAs , coalition ‘bags’ 5 seats, one goes to PDP
NC, Cong celebrate ‘cohesion’ in coalition, say victory would cement ties
4/14/2011 1:19:30 AM
SAROJ RAZDAN Jammu, April 13: In what can be seen as one more ‘peculiar’ instance of horse trading substantiating the cliché of ‘ strange bed fellows in politics’, the results of Legislative Council polls sprung a huge surprise with ‘give and take’ of votes not only between the rivals but also the parties which are ideologically poles apart . Opposition BJP indulged in brazen , rather naked cross voting as only four out of its 11 votes were cast in favour of the party candidate on Jammu seat whereas the rest 7 were apparently ‘shared’ by the ruling alliance partners- National Conference and Congress. Ruling coalition registered victory on five seats, three to NC and two to Congress whereas one seat was won by PDP. The ‘unusual and unexpected’ outcome of the result was seen on the two Jammu seats where NC and Congress ‘managed’ to get equal number of votes for their candidates 30 each for Master Noorul Hassan (NC) and Yashpal Khajuria (Congress), both of whom were declared elected. While PDP bagged the expected strength 24 in favour of its candidate Bharat Bhushan on Jammu...

Religious slogans raised inside Assembly lobby
4/14/2011 1:15:15 AM
