8/29/2013 11:52:09 PM
Akshay Azad JAMMU, Aug 29: Contrary to tall claims of State Government making state self-sufficient in all spheres, the Jammu and Kashmir is seemingly fully depend on imports to meet the annual requirement of food grains, meat, eggs, milk beside other eatables. Sources informed Early Times that as per recent estimates the present requirement of food grains of state was to the tune of 25 Lakh metric tons. "But surprisingly, despite having vast cultivable area, the state is producing only 7 Lakh metric tons of food grains, while the remaining demand of 18 Lakh metric tonnes that is 72 percent, is being met through imports", sources said. Adding more to worries of State Government, even the agriculture growth in state has been showing sharp decline. Against the target of 4 percent growth fixed by State Government, it has witnessed growth at around 2 percent at constant prices, sources said. In case of live stock growth, sources said, the state is also not showing any positive sign of improvement and it is found continuously depend on imports for requirement of meat. "The present req...

Wake up call for NC, buoyant Cong too needs to revisit its future strategies
LAHDC, Kargil poll 'surprise'
8/29/2013 11:50:54 PM
Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Aug 29: The outcome of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil's elections has a loud and clear political message which has wider ramifications and needs to be viewed, analyzed and looked into watchfully by all the parties including National Conference (NC), Congress, Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP). If the result of LAHDC Kargil is any indication then the ruling NC is certainly batting on a sticky wicket while on the other hand its alliance partner in the State Government-Congress, despite contesting the polls on its own has gained considerable ground in the Kargil region. The political pundits admit that though th...

Move gives fresh impetus to 'unlikely' prospects of future coalition
Jabbar's entry into party to prove costly for NC
8/29/2013 11:50:32 PM
Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 29: Having reposed faith and relied heavily in reaping political harvest in hustings next year, Congress feels itself in a tight spot after losing Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar to its ruling alliance partner National Conference. Congress is more perturbed at the move played by NC in wooing Jabbar first and finally embracing him in a manner to suggest it as latter's voluntary step. Congress sees it as its own partner denting the party's strongholds in Kashmir, development which it has taken seriously. Wooing Jabbar into NC fold is the latest grain that has strained further already edgy ties between the coalition partners. The move may give some benefits to NC bu...

Outcome of LAHDC Kargil elections doesn't augur well for NC
Rejections of divisive ideology
8/29/2013 11:50:18 PM
Rustam JAMMU, Aug 29: The Valley-based National Conference (NC), which dominated the Kargil's political scene since 1951, when elections to the Jammu and Kashmir constituent-cum-Legislative Assembly elections were held, on Wednesday suffered a massive defeat in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil elections, held on August 22. The NC, which had been heading the LAHDC Kargil since 2003, could win only 8 seats, as against its 2008 tally of 18. It means it lost as many as 10 seats, thus making it clear that the NC has lost its sheen and appeal even in Kargil, which was considered to be its pocket borough. The humiliating defeat of the NC in Kargil could be construed a...

For this purpose, the NC leadership in Kargil is making every effort to get independent candidates on their side. The NC is sending a message outside that four out of five independents were supported by them. "These independent members will support NC and will help in forming council," said a NC leader.
