CEC assures free, fair polls; warns against forced boycott

EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Nov 12: Warning separatists, of course without naming any, of a ‘firm deal under law’ for forcing election boycott, the Chief Election Commissioner of india N Gopalaswami today said enthusing voter turnout was upto the political parties. The full Election Commission which arrived in Srinagar today reiterated its commitment to conduct free and fair polls in J&K in coming elections. The assurance came from the CEC while addressing a crowded press conference here today on the first leg of Election Commission of India’s two day visit to the State to have first hand review of the poll arrangements being undertaken in the State. The ECI will undertake similar review in Jammu tomorrow. Gopalaswami was flanked by the Election Commissioners, Mr C. B. Chawla, Dr S. Y Qureshi, Chief Electoral Officer J&K, Mr B.R. Sharma and Deputy Election Commissioner, Mr R. Batacharya at the press conference. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 12: As the strings of Malegaon blasts and terror module spread far and wide, the Jammu Police on request of Maharashtra Anti Terrorist Squad arrested a Chartered Accountant and his son from Trikuta Nagar area of Winter Capital. The arrest of the father-son duo comes close to the heels of the arrest of the self styled spiritual guru Dayanand Pande from Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. The Jammu based Chartered Accountant is believed to be incharge of the accounts of Pande who has been linked with Malegaon blasts. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 12: Peoples Democratic Party today released a list for token contest in 10 assembly constituencies of Jammu region where its participation is expected to be mere ceremonial. Of the ten seats, the surprise announcement was for Nagrota constituency in Jammu district where the party has fielded one Abdul Rashid Malik. PDP patron and former Chief Minister Mohammad Sayeed is on record having announced the name of MLC Ved Mahajan for this constituency during a public meeting in the area earlier this earlier. EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Nov 12: In yet another gruesome accident in Doda district, second major in three weeks, at least eleven people were killed and around fifteen others were injured, eight of them critically, when a overloaded mini-bus veered off the road and fell into a deep gorge near Prem Nagar, 18 Kms from Doda on Jammu-Kishtwar National Highway. The ill-fated mini-bus was on its way from Thathri to Pul Doda in the mountainous Doda district when it met with the accident at Karara, near Prem Nagar at around 2:45 PM. AGENCIES ISLAMABAD, Nov 12: The Pakistan government on Wednesday said it would seek compensation from India for a water shortage in its territory, which it alleged was due the "diversion" of waters of the river Chenab to fill the Baglihar dam in Jammu and Kashmir. Water and Power Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said Pakistan would seek compensation from India in the form of additional discharge of water for the reduction of the flow of the Chenab from 55,000 cusecs to 22,000 cusecs.
