| Afzal's hanging likely to damage poll prospects of NC | | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 9: NC leader and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today did well to make a passionate appeal to the people to maintain calm and not do anything that could vitiate political atmosphere in the state, especially Kashmir Valley where even a petty incident leads to violence, strikes, shutdowns, dharnas and clashes. He made the appeal following the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri, today at 8 a.m. inside Tihar jail, Delhi. It is hoped that the people of Kashmir would not walk into the trap of extremists and help the Chief Minister, who also holds Home portfolio, maintain law and order, especially in the troubled Valley. At the same time, however, the Chief Minister has to ensure that his uncle and senior party leader Mustafa Kamaal, who always fishes in troubled waters and is in the habit of making irresponsible statements, does not go further and make statements which have the potential of arousing passions in the Valley. He has to be reined in forthwith considering the controversial statement that he made today: He said it was s...

| Rivals on same page: NC competes with PDP in reaction….? | | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 9: Even as opposition PDP and ruling NC are almost on same page as far as their reaction to Afzal Guru execution is concerned for obvious reasons of addressing their political constituencies and political considerations on mind, NC's observations, though different at different levels, are being seen only as in competition with its rival in order to gain more points and scores in political spectrum.
Both the parties have criticized the move of Union Government to hang Guru, contending clemency for which he made in appeal in 2011 should have been granted and death sentence should have been commuted to life imprisonment ,as an opposition party PDP has tried ...
| | | | Anger in Kashmir over Guru's execution on expected lines | | | |
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 9: When Afzal Guru, main convict in the 2001 terrorist strike on Indian Parliament in New Delhi, in which 15 people were killed and 20 wounded, was hanged to death today which was expected. Equally expected was the mixed reaction in the country. It was expected that parts of Jammu and Kashmir would witness violence, tension and anger because Guru was a citizen of Kashmir.
Well those who mourn the hanging of Guru need not blame any political party because the death sentence had been awarded by the court in 2004. And for all these over eight years the Government continued to dither on the issue because execution of Guru could trigger anger and violence in Ka...
| | | | State's flagship road projects behind schedule by decades | | 'Dreams' far from being realized | | |
Bashir Assad
Jammu, Feb 9: State's twin mega road projects - Mughal Road and Anantnag-Simthan-Kishtwar road - tipped as the alternate roads to Jammu-Srinagar National Highway are running behind scheduled first deadline by years now and if the work on the projects continues on the same pace, both could turn one generation projects.
Fresh deadlines are set after every previous deadline expires without fixing any accountability on the executing agencies as Government always attributes the delays to the difficult topographical terrains and unfavorable weather conditions but there is more in it than meets the eye.
The present dispensation led by Omar Abdullah has been claiming that Mugha...

| | | | 'Traffic Police lifts vehicles parked at free parking zones..! | | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 9: Dictatorial attitude of officers in Traffic wing of state police department has 'earned' sharp criticism from the inhabitants of the winter capital here.
The pick and choose method is being applied by the Men in Blue while discharging their duties on city roads. They (traffic cops) are least bothered to first check whether the vehicles are parked at the right place or not, they are just bothered to complete their target of vehicle lifting on the daily basis. Certain shocking instances have come to light, which clearly indicates traffic cops are taking city residents for granted.
Yesterday's incident outside the office of Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, is a ...
| | | | Authorities throw norms to winds while granting permissions | | Mushrooming of private schools | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 9: The finger of suspicion is raised towards functioning of Education Department as the mushrooming of the private schools is rampant but the education standards remained to be in shambles as there is no one to hear to woes of the students and their parents.
And the recent Delhi Public School episode which is not an isolated case which reminds the Nelson's eye approach by the concerned department towards its duties to monitor the things on ground. Pertinently last year a 10th class student of SOS Herman School Gole Gujral too had a narrow escape but had to amputate one of his legs after he was also hit by a truck outside the gate of his school. As per source...
| | | | Poonch Fort in miserable condition, encroached | | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 9: The Royal structure of the Poonch Fort is in miserable condition these days, and waiting for Archaeological Department to take over the charge, so that the heritage can be preserved.
The historic fort of Poonch narrates the pathetic story of tedious line, dividing not only the land but also the hearts. It tells how the line separated the people and even after six decades the people of both sides are praying if this line of hatred and enmity becomes worthless and they could meet their kiths across the LoC. But today even the fort feels helpless in expressing its own pitiable condition.
Before earth quake in 2005, it happened to be the abode of Government ...
| | | | Experts perform autopsy of ailing health care | | | |

| | | | Address core issue, say Kashmir politicians | | | |
Jammu: While Kashmir based parties and politicians have for evident reasons expressed unhappiness over execution of Afzal Guru, this has given them an opportunity to link up the Kashmir issue with the issue which they have desired to be settled by the two nations. While NC leader Mustafa Kamaal in his reaction today said that the root cause of unrest and violence was the Kashmir issue, he has asserted need to settle it saying this was the solution to prevent recurrence of such incidents. On the other hand PDF president Hakim Mohammad Yasin too in his reaction vouched strongly for addressing what he said was the core issue and its unsettled dimensions responsible for unrest among people ...
| | | | No to Mirwaiz, No to OIC | | Positive Developments | | | Rustam
JAMMU, Feb 9: Whatever the reasons, the Government of India has during the past four days taken a couple of decisions which all right thinking people and friends of India would appreciate and which should be construed as positive developments in the otherwise very depressing situation that prevails in the country. One cannot say that the Congress-dominated UPA Government has reformed itself or reoriented its policy towards Pakistan, India's number one enemy, and Kashmiri separatists like APHC-M chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, but one can surely feel that certain saner elements in the political establishment have been asserting and not only allowing those controlling the South and Nort...
| | | | Post Guru, uncertainty hangs over NC- Congress relation | | | |
Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 9: With Afzal Guru's hanging; political circles see uncertainty hanging over National Conference-Congress relationship.
The NC had been opposing the hanging fearing a serious backlash in Kashmir. Both Omar and Farooq made it repeatedly clear. Farooq was more vocal than Omar. He went to the extent of saying that Guru's hanging would set Kashmir on fire. Omar questioned the wisdom of BJP for opposing clemency to Afzal Guru.
Guru's ghost had started haunting Omar even before he was hanged. He desperately wanted a pre-poll alliance with the Congress but during his visit to Ajmer shrine he told reports there would be no such alliance with the Congress.
