Khoda's appointment: Legally right, morally wrong | Outgoing DGP should not stand at the centre of Govt-Opposition clash over SVC appointments | | Ahmed Ali Fayyaz
SRINAGAR, Jun 1: Even after his getting clean chit from J&K High Court in the so-called Bhaderwah triple murder, appointment of the outgoing Director General of Police (DGP), Kuldeep Khoda, as the first head of J&K State Vigilance Commission (SVC), is running the risk of being perceived as a blue-eyed boy's post-retirement rehabilitation rather than Omar Abdullah Govern-ment's commitment to curb corruption. Omar Abdullah's government, it appears, is bent upon bulldozing the public opinion and fulfilling its prestige in Mr Khoda's appointment. It could comfortably sail through the process if Governor, N N Vohra, restricted his judgment merely to the prism of technicality and legality. Significantly, in total ignorance of Justice Kapadia's direction, Chief Minister's draft of the amendment simply created room for induction of Police officers into SVC. Previously, only civil service officers were qualified to become members and heads of SVC. Appointment of IPS officers, in fact, reduces the difference between the SVC and State Vigilance Organisation. Police enjoyed ...

| | Hurriyat (M) on the verge of disintegration | Time To Strike | | RUSTAM
JAMMU, Jun 1: The Mirwaiz Umar Farooq-led Hurriyat Conference (HC-M) is a divided house. What happened on May 21 at the headquarters of the HC-M at Rajbagh, Srinagar, clearly reflected the rift. That day, violent clashes erupted between the supporters and followers of J&K Democratic Freedom Party (JKDFP) president Shabir Ahmad Shah and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. | | Kamaal seeking to impose NC's sectarian will on Jammu | Autonomy Resolution | | NEHA
JAMMU, Jun 1: National Conference (NC) general secretary Mustafa Kamaal has again taken on the Congress party and directed the party leadership not to "harass NC workers". He has warned the Congress leadership that any failure on its part to "mend its ways and stop harassing NC workers" would simply mean that it is "compromising whatever little mandate they have in Kashmir". Mustafa Kamaal, who is known for his very negative views on the Congress, took on the NC's coalition partner while addressing a convention of party workers at Dooru, Anantnag district, only the other day. His refrain was that it was the Congress party that had failed to "play a positive role in smooth functioning ...
