SRINAGAR, Aug 2: Congress parting ways from its coalition partner National Conference and deciding to contest the forthcoming Assembly elections on its own has put the NC in a catch-22 situation. NC top leadership seems confused and indecisive about what to do and how to proceed.
Till date National Conference has named 46 candidates who would contest the Assembly polls, slated to be held later this year, from various segments across Jammu and Kashmir, but it has left out the seats which till the recent past were considered to be its citadels.
Sources told Early Times that NC not even winning a single seat in the Parliamentary poll...
| | | | Kousarnag debate proves Omar has long relinquished powers to separatists | | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 2: It is not always that Kashmiri separatist leaders and the NC leaders are on the same page. But, when elections draw close, it has become a tradition for the NC leadership to sing songs of separatism. The forthcoming state assembly elections are no exception to this general rule.
In times of elections the statements of the separatist leaders and the NC leadership sound as if these are written by ideologically akin parties. One recent example of this is the opposition, on similar lines, to AFSPA and the more recent example is of Kausarnag Yatra.
Kashmiri Pandits have been undertaking religious journeys to Himalayan glacial Lakes in the Valley including the ...
| | | | J&K's most honest bureaucrat issues Health Department's dirtiest orders | | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Aug 2: Senior IAS officer Gazanfer Hussain is enjoying the reputation of being the Jammu and Kashmir State's most honest civil servant for his proven integrity in the last over 30 years of his unblemished service. But, ironically, the Commissioner-Secretary of Health & Medical Education departments has been used by the unscrupulously corrupt layers of the system-upward as well as downward-to issue arguably the Health Department's dirtiest transfer orders.
As per a familiar modus operandi, Directors of Health in Kashmir and Jammu framed and submitted two lists of the officers for transfer in a major reshuffle in the month of July 2014. Hand-picked names were gi...

| | | | Geelani's shutdown call unfortunate | | | |
Fazal Khan
SRINAGAR, Aug 2: Kashmir observed a shutdown today on the call of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who believes that yatra to Kousarnag in south Kashmir by a few people, can disturb the fragile environment in the area.
Calling for a shutdown against the yatra has hurt the sentiments of Kashmiri Pandits, who after a longtime are trying to relocate their roots in the Kashmir valley. "We are a part and parcel of the Kashmiri society. Despite it being our own land we are being treated as strangers. Geelani calling for a shutdown against the yatra has made it clear that he doesn't want us to return," said Rohit Kaul.
Kaul said, "We know it very well that people are not with G...

The call for strike was given by hard-line separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and it was supported by some other separatist groups. On the other hand authorities imposed restrictions in the five police stations of downtown Srinagar. The strike and the restrictions virtually led to a complete standstill of activities.

| | | | Embarrassment for Narendra Modi over Kousarnag yatra issue | | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 2: Prime Minister, Narendra Modi ,may find himself getting caught between the devil and the deep sea as far as the issue of Jammu and Kashmir Government's buckling under pressure mounted by separatists and their supporters which resulted in cancellation of the permission granted to Pandits to start their pilgrimage to Kousarnag lake from Kulgam area in the Valley.
In fact the Central Government had displayed no panic when the state authorities cancelled the permission which they had granted earlier. What could have compounded the Central Government's dilemma, especially for Narendra Modi, had the Kousarnag pilgrimage lasted for over a month. On the basis of ...

JAMMU, Aug 2: The Kousarnag pilgrimage is Indian conspiracy to change the Muslim majority character through the medium of pilgrimages, says Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Kashmir is a Muslim State, he also says. India is following in the footsteps of Israel and has launched cultural aggression on Kashmir, he further says. Early Times Report
JAMMU, Aug 2: In what could be termed as a glaring example of widening gulf between party high command and a common leader, Congress party has chosen a dead political leader as a member in the panel to shortlist and select candidates for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
Senior Congress leader Chaudhary Mohammad Aslam breathed his last this year in June but surprisingly the order copy issued by Congress High Command and signed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi contains the name of Aslam as a member to select the candidates from Congress party for Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. This has caused discomfort to his family.

SRINAGAR, Aug 2: National Conference and Congress don't seem to be serious enough to look into wrong doings committed by them in the last sixty months or so.
It appears as if the leaders of both the parties haven't accepted the verdict of the people in the recently concluded Parliamentary elections and are under the impression that by parting ways with each other, they can bounce back in the upcoming Assembly elections. Given the present political atmosphere of the state, it seems to be distant reality. 'When misfortunes come even the jelly can break the teeth'. The proverb fits to the situation as far as the present position of the NC and State Pradesh Congress committee...

JAMMU, Aug 2: The comprehensive defeat of the pro-autonomy National Conference (NC) and its unscrupulous ally, the Congress, and the massive victory of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the just-held Lok Sabha (LS) elections was taken by most of the people in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) to mean the opening of a new chapter in the history of the relations between New Delhi and the State. In fact, this electoral verdict was interpreted by many as a great political development in the troubled State that, according to them, promised politics based on sound democratic and economic issues. But, sadly, it was not to be. The NC and similar other Kashmir-b...
| | | | Breeding toxic childhood | | Growing use of internet by young teens is assuming more dangerous dimensions than having a positive impact on them | | | Sajjad Bazaz
Just a few days back, a re
tired government official mailed me woes of his MBA pass-out unemployed son. Among other things, his communiqué had a surprising mention of a list of recurring expenses which he has been bearing for his unemployed son. The most striking item in the expenses' list was a regular expenses on internet. Though the retired official has narrated his own financial worries, yet his query reminded me of growing dangers of internet in which our society is being engulfed. Internet is not only an unnoticed hole in our pocket but is also emerging like a menace as the growing use of internet by our children is assuming more dangerous dimensions than having a po...
