TOP STORY OF THE DAY
Charity begins at home! Employees rubbish govt advts
4/10/2010 12:14:21 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 9: Having presumably run out of all options to break the stalemate between it and the striking 4.5 lakh employees, the contentious issues now pose a threat to paralyse the government. The situation has now gone from bad to worse, signalling a serious political problem besetting the Omar-led coalition. Even the doors to discussions are shut on the government with the agitated employees saying parleys won't do anything now and this was the apt time for it to concede their genuine demands, including release of sixth pay commission arrears. Left with no other option, the government, through multi-colour advertisements, that appeared in local dailies in the past four days, expressed its helplessness to concede employees' demands, claiming that its expenditure was more than the earnings. The employees, however, rubbished the government claim, saying "charity begins at home. It first needs to stop draining the state exchequer in the name of unlimited facilities to chief minister, his cabinet colleagues, MLAs and MLCs". Through the advertisements, the g...

Media should play the role of watchdog
4/10/2010 12:13:37 AM
RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 9: Media is recognized throughout the world as the fourth estate. Media plays the role of a watchdog. It highlights the people's problems, puts official actions in proper perspective, points out achievements and misdeeds of the government and contributes to the process of nation-making. No state can be termed as state in the real sense of the term if it doesn't allow media to discharge its responsibilities towards the people and the state. Similarly, media cannot be considered a watchdog if it goes beyond the confines of the universally recognized cardinal principles, the most important being the objective reporting, coupled with well-intentioned and ...

4/10/2010 12:13:13 AM
ARTEEV SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 9: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-claiming to be a party with difference-today presented a confused and divided state of affairs of its ideology inside and outside the Legislative Assembly over the passing of the controversial Bill seeking ban on inter-district recruitment. The 'Party with difference' virtually became the 'party having differences' among its leadership when the senior party leaders made different statements vis-à-vis passage of Inter-district recruitment bill. The chaos and confusion within the leadership began in the Lower House of the State Legislature when the Leader of BJP Legislature Party Chaman Lal Gupta firstly described...

Govt brings Bill to regulate brick kilns
4/10/2010 12:13:06 AM
AHMED ALI FAYYAZ EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 9: Government of Jammu & Kashmir has finally introduced a comprehensive law seeking to regulate and control brick kilns but the draft Bill seems to be remarkably soft towards hundreds of unauthorized kilns which have been established by influential industrialists in brazen violation of environmental laws in the last two decades. As regards the new entrepreneurs, the Bill has proposed stringent penal punishment for violation of its provisions and, much like the draconian Forest Act, bar to judicial scrutiny in the matters of challenging the executive orders. On the concluding day of the 50-day-long Budget session in Legislative Assembly, Mi...

4/10/2010 12:12:58 AM

The NC she asserted has hurt the dignity and decorum of the Assembly by rushing through the passage without allowing debate over the issue.
