Political, intellectual support to stone pelting begins to diminish in Valley
Srinagar civilian's murder draws widespread flak against 'only tool of resistance'
5/5/2010 12:37:46 AM
AHMED ALI FAYYAZ EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, May 4: Many in politics and media attempted to underplay it as a routine incident of a civilian getting hit by a 'stray' stone during a street clash between the demonstrators and Police in this turbulent capital city. Others slogged to create an impression that the class 4thofficial of Jammu & Kashmir State Board of School Education died of a 'gunshot wound'. But, in the last five days, Kashmiris holding diverse political beliefs have been unanimous over the fact Shafeeq Ahmed Sheikh of Nattipora had been horribly killed in Batmaloo area on Friday last by a group of stone pelters who have embraced this form of social terrorism as a result of immense political and intellectual support in the Valley. That the politicians and intellectuals, known for justifying stone pelting as "our only tool of resistance against the state repression", have been isolated by the people at large is evident from the fact that nobody in Kashmir has accepted Hurriyat (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani's initial suggestion of Sheikh's death in 'firing'. A d...

BJP national leader makes 'soft' talk about Kashmiris
5/5/2010 12:36:20 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 4: In what can be seen as sharp contrast from its hard posturing and 'menacing' utterings on Kashmir related matters, BJP , it appears to have suddenly changed its strategy. The statement issued by party's National Spokesperson at least suggests the 'pleasant departure' from constant bashing and rhetorical approach of the party on such matters in the sensitive state of J&K. On his first visit to Srinagar after assuming the office of this post, Tarun Vijay, a popular name in the party at national level, has surprisingly come up with observations in the statement issued through press note today which are totally in contrast and contradiction of how the leade...

It is also known for its contribution to the well-being and happiness of the people of Jammu province as well as its stand on the anti-India India activities anywhere in the state. History belies NC claim of upholding press freedom
5/5/2010 12:35:13 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 4: When Sheikh Nazir told a gathering Tuesday that his organization (National Conference) had offered sacrifices for freedom of press, some elderly people laughed. A few of them shared their experiences with Early Times to apprise the younger generation as to how the second oldest profession was prostituted by National Conference. Ghulam Muhammad Kashfi was a renowned journalist and created a niche for himself in the pre-partition era. According to Mir Ghulam Rasool Nazki, Kashfi became Khidmat's editor in 1943. His unique style of writing and presenting news added new dimensions to Khidmat. His column "Confessions of Kashfi" became very popular and that wa...

Under pressure of TBS, JU notify MBA IV semester schedule 2 days before exams
5/5/2010 12:34:22 AM
Mishu Gupta EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 4: In what could be described as lackadaisical and casual approach of Jammu University authorities towards the students pursuing professional courses, the date sheet for holding annual examinations of MBA-IV semester was issued two days short of the commencement of papers. Ironically, the Examination Wing of the University, which has been authorized to finalise the 'student-friendly' examination schedule, was forced to conduct examination from May 7 by the Business School of the University. The delay in issuance of official notification of MBA-IV semester Annual Examination has quite apparently caused strong resentment among hundreds of MBA stu...

The new infiltration routes were identified by the CI agencies with the help of border residents and the troops guarding the borders, police sources said. 343 fined for smoking at public places
5/5/2010 12:24:12 AM
Early Times Report JAMMU, May 4: Even as the drug and food control organisation (DFCO) claimed to have fined 343 persons for smoking at public places, a lot needs to be done to strictly enforce the Prohibition of Smoking Act in the state. At almost every minibus stand or even in minibuses, people could be seen puffing cigarettes, much to the inconvenience of others. Official sources said the Prohibition of Smoking Act, which enforces the ban on smoking at public places, would now be strictly implemented. It may be mentioned that puffing induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease causes severe breathing difficulty and is termed the fourth leading killer worldwide. Sources said p...

5/5/2010 12:23:51 AM
Agencies MUMBAI, May 4: The prosecution on Tuesday sought death penalty for Pakistani gunman Ajmal Amir Kasab, convicted for 26/11 terror attacks, describing him as a killing machine manufactured in Pakistan who had total disregard for life. Special judge M L Tahaliyani reserved his judgement for Thursday after public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and defence counsel K P Pawar wrapped up their arguments on the quantum of sentence to 22-year-old Kasab, who was held guilty of mass murder and waging war against ...
